Changes to Conscience
Posted by la-t-da on July 5, 2009
When playing 13-dimensional chess on Uranus (h/t taggles), Obama is the player that sits there scratching his head with his middle finger. Then, with the decisiveness of a King, he comes in for the kill: He moves the Pawn. While Obama disciples praise, others (not enough) voice, “The Queen was open. She had a clear path to the Bishop. You could have signed FOCA as promised.”
During a Planned Parenthood Action Fund in July 2007, then campaigner Obama said, “the first thing I’d do, as president, is sign the Freedom of Choice Act. That’s the first thing that I’d do.”
Instead, how does Obama really play the game? He moves the pawn and leaves the Queen unprotected, for conscience sakes. During a Friday news cycle in February, in the wee minutes of the Obama presidency, an anonymous official came out of the closet to relay the administrations’ intention to rescind the Bush 11th hour Conscience Clause.
A Health and Human Services official said Friday the administration will publish notice of its intentions early next week, opening a 30-day comment period for advocates, medical groups and the public. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the notice has not been completed.
Perhaps that is really what he meant by signing FOCA as his first law. Although by April, in the prime time press conference marking his 100th day, President Obama relayed that signing the Freedom of Choice Act was not his highest legislative priority. (Indeed, having the ability to play chess on Uranus is out of this world to the rest of us living on planet Earth.)
Obama is doing with conscience what he did with his “radical changes” to Bush’s Faith-Based Initiative. In his grand strategy of equal protection under the law, he added a vital inclusion that organizations have the right to sue for discrimination. The slight of hand to progressives is that he did not rescind the entire Faith-Based Initiative.
In an executive order to be announced on Thursday, Obama does not rescind Bush’s provision to allow faith-based groups to discriminate in their hiring practices, but does provide a legal process for organizations to go through in order to ensure that hiring is legal and non-discriminatory.
His disciples would have you believe that as King of Kings, it’s okay to martyr a few pawns. While the religious right would have you think he is Satan. The pawn he is pawning, female sheep and goats, is our roar. He is going to rescind the 11th hour conscience clause (maybe) back to the Church Amendment (appropriately named) that has existed for 30 years.
Review of the Provider Refusal Rule. HHS has issued a notice of proposed rulemaking to rescind the provider refusal rule – a recent regulation that expands the interpretation of existing “conscience clause” statutes that protect the rights of health care professionals to refuse to provide abortion services. The comment period ended on April 9. After a thoughtful and serious review of all the comments, HHS will determine whether to rescind the regulations, modify the proposed rule, or propose an entirely new rule. No matter which option is selected, providers will continue to be protected – as they have been for years – by the existing conscience clause statutes that will remain in place.
As announced earlier in the week by the Ministry of Propaganda (the Knights), Obama is scheduled to meet with the Pope next week. This comes on the astronomical cusp, in conjunction with, the announcement of, his tangent to rescind the 11th hour premeditated presidential unconsciousness of Bush.
This meeting of a couple men of yolk sitting around discussing religious conscience while gossiping about the female body (I don’t know, maybe the topic of reproductive rights will come up) has been scheduled since last November.
Though Barack Obama won’t be announcing his foreign travel plans anytime soon, it’s a good bet that the new U.S. President will meet Pope Benedict XVI sometime next year, perhaps in early July to coincide with the G-8 summit in Italy.
Eight pawns sit on one side of the chessboard, and it is coming into full view (for those willing to apply window cleaner to transparency) that Obama intends to pawn off each and every one of them until he gets what he wants: a win in 2012.
Is he trying to replace the votes of pro-choice women and gays (mass run and run and run on generic Windex at the dollar store lately) with the faith-based voting block? Or is his grand strategy, equal opportunity chess games for all under one big tent? Either answer equals votes.
The man isn’t playing 13-dimensional chess on any planet. He is gaming equal protection under the law by pawning women and gays, and all people of faith, for that matter. He is embedding religion deeper into our state right here on Earth.
Obama is but pawning himself out as Bishop to the Faith-Based voting block as Bush did before him. Bush’s conscience built Mega-Churches on corners adjacent gas stations. Obama’s takes us back to that small little Church, down that dirt road, to the left of that big oak tree, where the choir rejoiced and swayed, until the game of musical chairs stops.
He is promising the religious right equal protection of their conscience, while toying with the physical well-being of women and gays. This is not a game. He is thinking with his middle finger. He is screwing with minds and lives and faith.

Wow! What a fabulous post and so well worth waiting for!
The one and only a word to apply to Obama is “@sshole”! Keeping the fundies happy should not be the first order of any elected official, let alone the President of the US.
I hate these people!

Welcome La-t-da! Thanks for this great post.
In reality, he still has not fully explained what he will do with the clause. In all likelihood, he will rewrite it to sound better to fauxgressives, still leaving a giant loophole for physicians and pharmacists to refuse birth control to women.
Signing FOCA would return control of the issue of reproductive rights to women, and not their husbands, pastors and doctors. It would make all of this namby-pamby pandering to misogynists in the health profession completely unnecessary. That is why he will never sign it unless forced to do so by a giant mass of people.
For whatever reason, Obama appears to be committed to the fundiegelicals and will court their votes at all costs. Everyone else can go sit and spin on that famous middle finger.

I know, MB, the language in the HHS “Progress Report” is infuriating. It is like living on another planet just to get through it. That is the only blurb in that 15 page “progress” about abortion. He will give the fundie block what they want and sell it as progressive.

Exactly, La-t-da!
Have a great day, Angie, and happy 4th afrocity!
I think I have a sinus infection. Shouldn’t have taken such a long walk yesterday. Am going to lie out in the sun today, and go see a doctor tomorrow.

I was so determined to get it in. I tried for hours until I just broke down and asked her to do it for me. Thanks, MB! You know me, I love’s me some Joan…”Don’t F@ck with me, fellas. This ain’t my first time at the rodeo.”

I am back safely form Orlando I was not on the Monorail that crashed last night at the ticket and transportation center…
If Obama thinks he will get any fundie votes in 2012 He is dreaming. I can count on one hand with three fingers and a thumb removed just what the religious right will give hime in 2012….

in case that was not clear to anyone the fundies will give Obama the same middle finger that he is giving to Us Women and Gays…
what does everyone think of Sarah Palins Resignatin while Sanford hangs on with his Delfrighteous hypocritical Bigotted fingers to his governorship?

Glad you are safe, fuzzy. understatement.
I have a feeling there are Sarah Palin “what is she going to do” threads in our future. I preempting what am I going to do if she runs. I know I won’t vote for her. I just don’t see that in my future.
Obama is setting her up to run by all his duplicitous crap. What I will do is search out a real progressive female to run and work my ass off again. Can anyone think of one?

Michael: Sanford is still a sleazebag but is holding out his resignation until Tuesday afternoon as I have predicted.
Truthfully, and I expect brickbats for this, but Palin’s decision is no big loss for me.
An unknown plucked from nowhere and thrust upon the national stage completely ill prepared. Essentially unknowledgable, unread, and unprepared. But this resignation, or whatever she is up to, may have three prongs attached:
1. She tired of the personal abuse hurled at her and the family and called it quits.
2. She is “resigning” to pursue a more lucrative future and prepares her run for office.
3. There is something not quite kosher coming out.
I will defend her against the egregious attacks that have been leveled against her as a woman. Many of these were truly obscene and outrageous. But to be perfectly honest, she reminded me more of Bush when she spoke. Rambling, unfocused, and out of her depth when discussing the issues.
Her positions are no different than Mike Huckabee and there is no desire to see him as president, so it always struck me as rather hypocritical to compare her actions and motives to Hillary Clinton when the difference was enormous.
One needs to go beyond the gender and seriously consider the policies and positions before breathlessly supporting a candidate based on gender, and in her case, looks.
And abandoning her position as governor today when each state is faced with economic turmoil does not speak well for her in my mind. But this is just my opinion.

great post. You can share Pat’s cheesecake filled chocolate covered strawberries.
I saw that mo dowd is still attacking Sarah Palin. That is one jealous, sick person. She can not write, has no redeeming value, must have pictures, negatives and kneepads to keep her job. Some one please tell her that being a shrieking shrew is so unattractive and annoying.

MB: Gotta agree with la-t-da. Get one of those netty pot things. I bought one at Walgreens and it helped tremendously. The one I got had the pre-measured packets to mix in with it. I also bought a gallon of distilled water to use with the pot. I can say they are well worth the price of, I think, $20-25 or so.
BTW: for my northern brethren and sistren, I hope you enjoy your sunny days finally! It’s our turn down here to get the rainy stuff. I think we’re supposed to have it for 2 or 3 days then just the typical summer popcorn showers. We are under a slight risk of severe weather according to SPC; clash of the fronts and all.

Well la-t-da, here is one of your friends from your other blog that thinks you’re stupendous and are one heck of a writer. I’m afraid that I have not been following this issue as closely as I should have, I have been keeping my eyes on the health care reform issue and have been worried that a public option might not include the possibility of an abortion. I pray that it will not include that. Is that a double negative or double positive?
Regarding Palin, so lets see, she’s getting out of public office so that she can have less experience? Apparently less experience is now the high bar for the presidency. Oops, did I say that?

I don’t know if Palin intends to run for President, but she definitely intends to turn herself into a major mover and shaker. Her statement on facebook listing all the ways she wants to unite conservatives (energy independence, fiscal responsibility, national security) made no mention of moral issues. This is the one reason I’ve never completely washed my hands of her. She has never governed like a religious fanatic. Social issues and public policy have never collided in her careers as mayor and governor. This is why, also, I wouldn’t exactly compare her to Huckabee. Huckabee talked about morality and legislating it all the time. Palin never has. If her intent is to run for President, I think she made a mistake by resigning. But if her intent is to become a big player in the conservative movement, while making lots of money, then she’s taking the right course.
As far as there being something sinister about to come out – her lawyer has already made a statement that they are looking at legal options against certain blogs that have been pushing that theory. And he specifically mentioned the fact that NYTimes, MSNBC, WaPo, and HuffPoop have repeated these lies and that they will not let them get away with it. The FBI apparently also confirmed that Palin is not under investigation.

Pat J — the FBI issued a statement yesterday that there is no investigation of Palin at all. It seems that rumor was started by an Alaskan blogger named Moore. Palin’s attorney has threatened legal action on Moore, the msm or any other bloggers that attempt to perpetuate that smear. So lets drop that speculation because it is treading on dangerous territory.
Ok, back to work for me.

Hey La, You will have to write slower and use smaller words if you want me to understand. Too high brow for this simple country girl. Let me see if I have this right. You want women to have a choice but not medical providers?
la-t-da said
Hey (((((Joy))))). Yes, I want women to have the legal choice that they are already legally granted. When the Church Amendment was proposed (by a Dem btw) and voted for 92-1, it immediately intended to take away gains earned in Roe. We, women, were the one given the choice. These conscious clauses just keep shifting chairs around on the Titanic, defocusing on it just takes away “our” control of “our” choice. Do I think doctors and pharmacists have the right to refuse services? No freaking way.
