I AM GAINFULLY EMPLOYED, ONCE AGAIN!
For the next six weeks, I will be in training. I’ll be around some, but my time will be limited..
So, in the meantime, cause Pat’s got jury duty, and la’s got some stuff and MB works, and I’m gonna be a bit distracted, we’re going to depend on you folks to keep things going here at The Widdershins for a little while!
I’ll be posting in the am and I’m sure there will be other posts from MB and all, but a thread might stay up for a while longer than usual. Please feel free to discuss breaking news or OT stuff!
Wish me LUCK!
OPEN THREAD..
taggles, Stepping briefly out of Lukerville to offer mega-congrats and best of luck on your new gig!
Congrats, taggles. That is funny: there is a character in 9-5 named “R0z” and Roz posted just before you posted the video. That’s the depth of my mind today. I’m going back to read the morning post. Just got my computer set up…once again. Arghhh.
How wonderful, Taggles. May this be the start of something really great.
Congratulations on the new job!!!!
I’ll “try” to get out a couple more front page pieces before I go and I’ll finish some while I’m there. I realized I could go to the library to get internet access. That’s my plan anyway.
Hey, invalid why don’t you make a trip back home to LA also then we can meet. I know you can just drop everything to do that.
Oh, bummer, invalid. We will probably pass in the night. I will back home (AZ) by the end of October. Oh, well, maybe one year.
Now, invalid, why would I go home for a month, come back to AZ, and turn around and go there again. I was thinking of you though yesterday. I downloaded songs to my ipod for the road trip.
It is a 20 hour drive, invalid.
Also Cinie often post some really good songs over at her site. I downloaded a few of those too.
It is a 20 hour drive, invalid.

“US snubs film on theory of evolution
ANITA SINGH
September 13, 2009
A BRITISH film about Charles Darwin has failed to find a US distributor because his theory of evolution is too controversial for American audiences, according to its producer.
Creation, starring Briton Paul Bettany, details the naturalist’s “struggle between faith and reason” as he wrote On the Origin of Species.
It depicts him as a man who loses faith in God after the death of his daughter, Annie, 10.
The film was chosen to open the Toronto Film Festival and has its British premiere today. It has been sold in almost every territory around the world, from Australia to Scandinavia.

Insanity, bullheadedness and profound ignorance have taken over our country!!!!
**********
The fact that they can block the distribution of a documentary movie in the US by intimidation is f*cking unbelievable. Religious fundamentalism is the biggest threat to this country, that I can think of. In the “old” days when there was a surge in fundamentalism, it was hampered by being rooted in rural America and the lack of strong financial backing. Very different ballgame today…they have a sh*t load of money thanks to the billions of “Faith based ” $$.
Late Night good news!!
“Amateurs report ‘common true katydid’ throughout NYC, despite none documented in 100 years ”
“Turns out, common true katydids were hiding in plain sight. It took an expedition paddling on the Gowanus Canal mere minutes in the field to report hearing the songs of common true katydids in Brooklyn, said Ken Kostel, Cricket Crawl NYC’s official blogger. Others common true’s were reported by groups in Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx. In total, more than 100 reports on the seven fairly easy-to-identify species came in from various expeditions, which were being processed well into the early morning hours of Sunday by Sam Droege of the U.S. Geological Survey, as well as Elizabeth Johnson and Louis Sorkin of the American Museum of Natural History”
After La Cruces is a sorry drive through the ass end of Texas.
I go through El Paseo: it is pretty cool.
Then nothing from there to Dallas.
My oldest and bestest friend from college/nursing school lives in El P. It’s a really cool town.
As for the fundies, the problem comes when they demand our respect for their religious beliefs, and we are intimidated into thinking we are the intolerant ones, not they.
***********
That is one reason why I am absolutely opposed to any form of “Hate Speech” law such as they have in Canada. Any criticism of their “religion” would end up in litigation.
Congratulations and best of luck, Taggles!
Congratulations! Excellent news. Hope you have fun in training!
Congratulations, Taggles, on your new job. Your new employers will be getting somebody with a lot of courage and follow-through, and they’re lucky to have you.
At the risk of raising some Widdershinsians’ (all right, probably all Widdershinsians’) blood pressure, I should like to add something to a subject brought up yesterday, namely, the conscience clause in the Obama health care bill.
Naturally, it’s wretched that it’s in there, but if you think President Hillary would have insisted on taking it out, much less no-funding for abortion, I have to direct you to this article: http://www.villagevoice.com/2005-03-29/news/time-for-a-prayer-circle/
Political realities are often ugly; there are compromises, maneuvers, and machinations that politicians like both Clinton and Obama understand as necessary to get anything accomplished at all. This is one of them, and to think that President Clinton #44 would have let this clause shoot down HER healthcare bill, again, is dreaming, IMHO.
I am hoping that I won’t have to go through what I went through when CIGNA tried to weasel out of paying for my emergency appendectomy: who knew that appendicitis could be a pre-existing condition! True, I’d gone to a doctor in the past for a stomach ache….
La-t-da –
The goal is to not have the Bush 11th hour conscience clause there. The one that HHS and Obama should just overturn outright instead they are “tinkering” with out rather just axing it. I might be misunderstanding something though.
You are correct. That is why NOW was so up in arms.
Mrs. Polly, please read the post before this one for clarification. Thanks!
Madamab, that the article is from 2005 doesn’t dilute its point: it just shows that Hillary was working with what she deemed necessary for a number of reasons, including political expediency, then, just as she was when she sponsored a flag-burning amendment. That is the move of a politician positioning herself for a run at the expense of a number of considerations liberals hold dear. Anybody who can view that action and still believe that Hillary is an unbesmirched exemplar of progressivism rather than a pragmatic political actor upon a political stage is going to be disappointed in the end. That’s why it is a mistake to fall in love with ANY politician.
I have never claimed that Hillary would throw women’s reproductive rights out the window. But I do believe she would make this concession rather than lose healthcare for a second time, yes. The way she is invoked for what she WOULD have done reminds me of widowed spouses invoking the sainted departed to the new partner, who can hardly compete with the image in someone’s head. It’s entirely speculative. The real Hillary Clinton is right now working with, and apparently enjoying working with, the Obama administration. They are both centrist Democrats, faced with an unbelievable combination of disasters resulting from eight years of mismanagement. It could easily be argued that she has much the preferable job.
Name calling is a tactic that will not advance any argument beyond a temporary feeling of self-satisfaction. The word “Obot” seems to me to be used as a slur that shuts down critical, specific discussion. Generally, the Widdershins seems to be pretty free of this sort of thing. This past weekend saw a convulsion of particularly odious attacks on a cartoonish figure that the attackers believe to be the President. The term “Obot” seems to me a cartoonish construct that dismisses wholesale whatever the person so labeled has to say. I don’t think it has any place in a serious discussion.
I sent an Internet friend of mine who was once a PUMA to Widdershins, because I thought she’d feel at home, though Lord knows we disagree about the, well, you know. But there’s a positive pleasure in agreeing on our commonalities. I think that’s a much better employment of our energies than sniping.
Thanks, Madamab, but if I want to critique Obama from the left, I can do it at my home blog,
http://www.rumproast.com/index.php/site/comments/mr_president_can_we_get_a_clean_blindfold_here_please/
where visitors with diverging viewpoints aren’t cursed at.
Whenever someone shows up at RR who doesn’t agree, all that person has to do is stay civil, and that person is treated civilly. That does mean engaging in argumentation, but as long as that person defends her/his argument earnestly, we have a good debate.
However, should a visitor be incivil, snide, and try to score insult-points, I am not responsible for the shellacking s/he receives. Not entirely, anyway.
You’ll notice I have been nothing but polite here, and up until now, have been treated courteously. I don’t think your attitude is representative.
For what it’s worth, when I went over to Rumproast to correct some commentators on a few points pertaining to the film I was working on at that time, I was treated with far greater courtesy than I had been at any PUMA site. The simple fact is that at Rumproast, a dissenting view stands a much greater chance of fair treatment than on either Confluence or PUMA PAC Org.
Congrats on finding employment, Taggles! I know what its like suffering extended periods of unemployment. Its emotionally draining.
Brad is one of our favorite visitors. It took awhile, but we’ve come to love and respect him and his work. We’re really not all that bad and NONE of us fits what my mental definition of an obot.
Thanks, CNAK. I am an Obama supporter, but never really sure of what “obot” means. Trust me when I tell you that I’ll take Obama to task just as soon as the next non-obot for what I see as backing off campaign promises, triangulating or sucking up to duplicitous Republicans.
Mrs. Polly,
I agree with carolinenotakennedy.
I do not think your action of coming in here with a year-and-a-half-old argument about how Hillary is no better than Obama and would have done exactly the same thing on health care, is a good starting point for a friendly dissenter to take. It is so 2008. Hillary is not the President. Obama is. How do you feel about his health care plan and what it is doing to women? Do you agree? Disagree? Do you care? If not, do you have another point to make about a different issue?
If you had some sort of real point to make, you would have been treated with a lot more courtesy.
And gimmeabreak – welcome!
