One of the major sticking points in the Senate committees when debating health “insurance” reform appears to be the coverage of undocumented persons. I live in south Florida, and I have only to glance at my property tax assessment to realize what a costly proposition this is: it is estimated that roughly 2 of each 5 of the uninsured is also undocumented, and the portion of county taxes allocated to the hospital district are glaringly reflective of this fact.
An attorney friend has shared that this never had to be – there are laws which permit the various agribusinesses to bring in seasonal workers legally, subject to public health clearances of both the workers and the housing provided for them. Sadly, it is much more cost effective to permit them to hazard the trip here on their own, paying large sums to the coyotes who guide them across our borders, shelter them in the meanest of shacks, and subrogate their health care to the local property owners. This grim practice was more and more utilized during the previous administration, ‘cuz “bidniss is bidniss”, don’tcha know?
For a period of time, the large public hospital that employed me would request “pappillitos” prior to granting treatment for all but the most emergent situations. Some patients could and did produce them, many could not and left without seeking care. Many of the nurses objected, as we are not Immigration and Customs Officers, and we did not sign on for those chores. However, the county remained firm in this resolve, so the undocumented took their fevers and coughs home with them, and never came for prenatal care.
Within a period of six months, we saw a sharp increase in birth injuries, because mothers delivered at home assisted by local (and unlicensed) midwives armed with few drugs, little equipment, and variable talents in their chosen field. Also in that same time frame, we were hit by a memorable outbreak of variant tuberculosis – and a few cases of leprosy – which soon found their way into the general population. Needless to say, it was one hell of a mess, and it was much more costly to fix than had we cared for them properly in the first place. The “pappilitos” request was dropped, and the general care of the patients was restored to some sort of order over a period of time.
Universal health care must therefore be just that. While I am certainly not supporting free breast augmentations for one and all, I am stating that anyone should be able to seek medical care, prenatal care, immunizations and well child care regardless of their immigration status. Not only is it a moral imperative, but a public health one as well.
ACTION ALERT: If you live in the New York City area, come march for Universal Health Care, Medicare for All on Tuesday, September 29th from 4 – 6 pm!
I understand Bill Clinton was on Meet the Press this morning. Anyone check him out?

As part of the “deal” that was made by Obama with the Hospital Associations, there was an agreement to reduce Federal payments to “Disproportionate Share Hospitals” by $50 billion. The DSH are the Public and other hospitals that provide care for the poor and undocumented. In addition they are the hospitals that provide the majority of trauma and burn care. Just like Obama’s secret meetings with the Insurance and Drug company CEOs, Obama never invited any person or group that represented patients, to come to the White House. When the negotiations to cut $50 were going on, no representative for the Public Hospital Association was invited.
As a follow on to BC on MTP..Here is a piece in Time about Bill and Chelsea.
I’m surprised that they make a big deal out of Bill being a good father. Bill raised Chelsea when he was governor. Hillary was the “bread winner” for the family in addition to all of her extra duties on Hospital, corporate boards and social projects. If Chelsea was hurt at school, it was Bill who was called, which lead the wing-nuts to call Hillary a “bad” mother.
SHV, interesting article, yet why is there surprise that a “man” feels the need to be by the side of his child, while the woman is the prime provider? It happens every day, yet there is no publicity to illustrate the reality. When will this world get beyond “Leave it to Beaver”, which was a marketing construct, and get down to recognizing the reality of the world? It’s discouraging, to say the least, both for men and women. We are not marketing constructs, we are individuals who do what we need to do to nourish and raise our children.
From a single mom, with no support, who raised two pretty incredible human beings.
P.S. that bit about Bill and Hillary Clinton only made me respect them more. They were truly ahead of their time. Pity more of us couldn’t follow their lead.

That was a surprise for me, that in 2009, Time magazine still thought that was a remarkable story. In the ’80′s, Hillary was attack for her not looking like a proper Governor’s wife, working full time, etc. Bill never cared about money, (I don’t think he made more than $35k before becoming President) and I suspect that irritated Hillary a bit, but Hillary was the one bringing home the money and worrying about the financial future for the family. Baaad Mother!!! How many people who have bashed the Clintons over the past 30 years have a child as well adjusted as Chelsea?
You know, I see the same disinformation tactics surrounding the “women’s place” and the “Man’s responsibilities” in the marketing blitz, as the ones surrounding the “health care” keruffle. The same marketing departments at work, with the same outmoded, outdated tools. Sadly, the seem to be still effective. At least they still want to retain the 1950′s, unlike the Taliban and Iranian governing bodies who want to keep us in the 6th century, but by and large, what is the difference. Both groups want to suspend time and evolution to conform to their own, rather narrow needs. Sadly, it affects us all.
Chat, it was never an issue whether Merkel would be re-elected. The issue was with her partnerships/coalitions – whether she would get the Right leaning support she was intending, or whether the voters would vote her in, with a leftist majority. Should be an interesting time in Germany. We’ll see how well she works with the rest of her government, however, she’s one very smart politician.
And heaven forbid you should be at home watching TV during the day

By mid-2008 primary the TV went dark and has been turned on max 20 times since for a few sports shows or when Al was hooked on “The Girls Next Door”. I haven’t watched TV “news” for at least 1 1/2 years and haven’t missed it in the least.
I withdrew from Keith early in the primary season.

Keith went away after he defended Michael Vick’s dog fighting.
Since the “undocumented” are encouraged to come here for the express purpose of lowering wages for
blue collar Americans, I couldn’t support a plan that includes them.

But in his bestest heckled speech, Obama reassured his real base that immigrants and women will be left out – you don’t want to make a liar out of him, do you?
And NYT defends is bias by the pretense that they are protecting….the progressive movement
