It seems as if we are living in a world where common sense, compassion and yes, decency, have been tossed by the wayside in order to promote the interests of the hatemongering, self-centered and often mentally ill over the interests of the well-intentioned, good-hearted and generally sane, which latter group vastly outnumbers the former.
Look at the United Nations, which now tolerates and even encourages the participation of Holocaust deniers. As the Prime Minister of Israel, Binyamin Netanyahu, said on Thursday, this tolerance goes against the very idea of the foundation of the United Nations.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Thursday took to task the countries of the world that had sat silently and listened the day before to Holocaust-denier Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, asking them, “Have you no shame, no decency?”
To those who boycotted Ahmadinejad’s speech, or left in protest, Netanyahu said, “I commend you, you stood up for moral clarity.
“But for those who stayed – I say on behalf of the Jewish people, my people and decent people everywhere – have you no shame? No decency? What a disgrace, what a mockery of the charter of the UN,” he declared.
Netanyahu opened up his address – which dealt more with Ahmadinejad and the UN Human Rights Council’s Goldstone Report accusing Israel of war crimes than with the diplomatic process with the Palestinians – by saying that the UN had been “founded after the carnage of World War II precisely to prevent a recurrence of such events.”
“Nothing has undermined that mission, impeded it more, than the systematic assault on the truth,” he said.
“Yesterday the president of Iran stood at this podium spewing his latest anti-Semitic rants. Just a few days earlier, he claimed that the Holocaust is a lie.
“Last month I went to a villa in a suburb of Berlin called Wannsee,” Netanyahu went on. “There, on January 20, 1942, after a hearty meal, senior Nazi officials met and decided to exterminate my people. They left detailed minutes of that meeting, and these meetings have been preserved for posterity by successive German governments.”
Dramatically brandishing the document, Netanyahu said it instructed the Nazi government exactly how to carry out the extermination of the Jews.
“Is this protocol a lie?” he asked. “Is the German government, all German governments, lying?”
Of course the German government is not lying. Everyone knows the Holocaust happened, including Achmadinnerjacket. It’s just that it serves the interests of those hatemongering few to pretend otherwise. And so, decency goes out the window, just as it did in the McCarthy era, during which my grandfather was blacklisted for being a Communist. (Of course, McCarthy’s was partially an anti-Semitic crusade as well, given that most American Communists at the time were Jewish.)
But let’s not pat ourselves on the back and claim that the McCarthy era is over, so we are now a decent country. Au contraire, mes amis. The Reaganite, Social Darwinist, Fuck-You-I’ve-Got-Mine, Libertarian mentality has also robbed America of its decency. The targets of the hatemongering few have simply changed from Jews to women, LGBT and the melanin-enhanced.
Take a listen to one of the most evil and heartless Congresscritters currently pretending to serve his constituents, Arizona Republican John Kyl. He is actually arguing that maternity leave should not be included in whatever POS health care proposal the Senate Finance Committee comes up with. (Knowing that committee, it probably won’t be.) How does he argue against maternity leave? Like this:
Yes, you moron, your mother needed maternity care, and so do the tens of millions of women who are mothers today, not sixty years ago. Many of those mothers live in Arizona, in fact. Is this guy kidding?
Sadly, no. He is not kidding, because he has no decency.
I ask you, whatever happened to class?
This is an open thread.
Exactly, DYB. There is no way he would be making those arguments if there were more women in that room!
More “no decency:” William Safire, influential Iraq War cheerleader, dies peacefully at home at the age of 79, whereas millions of people are dead, wounded and displaced partially because of his columns.
Well, chatblu, it takes a lot of energy to be as obnoxious as Rush and Bill O every day. No wonder they need the little blue pills!
BTW – have people seen the picture on the cover of Glenn Beck’s new book? I was in Barnes & Noble yesterday and came across it. He is literally dressed like a Nazi, and he’s dyed his hair blond to further match the Aryan ideal.
Talk about no decency…what is the demographic he’s trying to attract, I wonder?!
“Wal-Mart best symbolizes America, a new poll finds”
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090928/ap_on_re_us/us_tv60_minutes_vanity_fair_poll
That’s indecent but mistreating workers is definitely a popular American trait (of those who employ the most people)
You know, it is so sad that a giant corporation best symbolizes America. But really, what else is a better fit?
When was the last great thing America did? Landing on the moon? Wow, almost 50 years ago! We really are rotting from the head down.
It is stunning to me that the PM of Israel felt compelled to use visual aids to counteract those lies. God, I felt so bad in that moment, that he was compelled to wave those papers. What happens if those documents and places are destroyed? Also stunning that the Iranian election thief was even allowed to say those things in an UN assembly, without a major walkout or planned protest.
Free speech is critically important, but as in our election, Ahmadinejad is trying to rewrite history for his convenience. It’s unconscionable, and people must speak out about it. I didn’t follow the subsequent assemblies–does anyone know how others addressed the comments?
Netanyahu is on the mark when he calls it an attack on decency. He’s right, and these attacks are occurring with greater frequency in higher stakes settings.
Witness our election, the debates on health care, the sexism and misogyny that persists since its unleashing in the primary. Good for you to remind us that these jackals are still in the minority. But their power is great and somehow we must whittle it away.
And who can forget when Rush Limbaugh was detained after a 2 week Bahama vaykay
***********
Limbaugh and his four friends were returning from the Dominican Republic which is a top “Sex Vacation” destination. Underage sex is the real “attraction” in the Dominican Republic for scum like Limbaugh.
35-40 Years ago the Dominican Republic’s big attraction was “quickie” divorces.
It is stunning to me that the PM of Israel felt compelled to use visual aids to counteract those lies.

If I had to pick one “visual aid” for people to see to get some understanding of the Holocaust it would be “Kitty Return—to Auschwitz”. No emaciated people or bodies but a middle aged woman walking around the Auschwitz Compound with her son, describing what it was like for her, as a young teenage, and her mother trying to survive there. For me, her verbal descriptions are much more “real” than actual pictures.
if it was medically proscribed viagra Kyl would be all for it no doubt…this guy is a tool
Wow! I dig the new paint job! I’ve been on a self imposed “Hiatus’ and look what happens to the place.
Well I can say that if you go to the private market to look for an individual health policy, generally they don’t include maternity benefits. Some of the companies I looked at had an option to add maternity benefits, but like anything else, if you add something on to the “base price” it costs you more.
And really, the Republicans (at least Kyl) are looking at this the wrong way. After all, the Republican mind set is that all women should be married and at home and raising babies. How are you gonna have those babies if you don’t have maternity care to pay for delivering them?
Well Chat, they left themselves open for that one!
Indeed. Nice save in Starksville Saturday.
They should have lost the damned game and then maybe something would happen to shake them up. I mean 3 interceptions from Miss. State and *no* points off them?
And LSU **always** plays nice! Sometimes too nice for their own good!
The FL game will be interesting now that Tebow got his bell rung.
Can I just add that every time I see that Favreau picture, it galls me again that he is employed with our tax dollars. What an immature jerk. And B0 is one too for not firing Favreau’s bum when this came to light.
I saw this over at Susie Madrack’s site.
Look at what one guy when through to get a script for Tamiflu filled when he was diagnosed with swine flu:

Utterly ridiculous!!
If Tebow has a Grade I or Grade II concussion, he should make the LSU game.
Hmmm…who’s the patron saint of having mean thoughts? Maybe he won’t be up to 100%, although even Tebow at 50% is not good for the opponent!
Totally OT, but just had to chime in here because it’s flu season, and Fredster made mention of Tamiflu (the drug that is associated in a bad way with Rumsfeld). In my country (Canada) 5 out of the 10 provinces have changed their protocol of flu vaccinations, which would normally be regular flu, then swine flu, because there is a research study that was done that indicates that people who have the regular flu shot are more susceptible to swine flu. As a result, 5 provinces have suspended the regular flu vacines (which of course is covered by our “socialist medicine”) because of the concern about contra implications – they intend to administer them to the most vulnerable to the regular flu, and not the prime candidates of H1N1 flu – those 60 and over, but do not want to jeopardize those most susceptible to H1n1 flue, those under 60. They intend to offer the regular vaccine in January, once the implications and timeline of H1N1 have been assessed. One province is going ahead with the regular flu shot, but the other 4 and three territories haven’t decided, because the research, while compelling, has not been completed. Just a heads up to my American friends and I’m so sorry you consider our health system as a communist/marxist system (which Latida could explain in more detail as incorrect. Where is La-t-da anyway? Just a lurker, but I miss people.
Hey everyone – Yom Kippur is over and I survived my eight hours of singing.
How are things? Looks like football is the topic of the day. Any favorites in tonight’s game?
Man, Dallas looks like crap! Tony Romo is so overrated. Why did I pick them in the work football pool!
Chatblu, the Dawgs are doing well! You must be psyched.
Chatblu, the Dawgs are doing well! You must be psyched.
Oh and so nothing for my LSU Tigers eh?
re the flu shots…Oh boy I just got mine Thursday! And to top it off, I think I got a little itty bitty bit of the bug from the shot. That has happened to me before but it’s been awhile. Still, this was feeling kinda nauseous and last night (Sunday) having chills really big time.
The momster is supposed to get her regular flu shot this coming Thurs. and I called and told them we both needed our pneumonia booster or whatever since it’s been 5 years. I’ll have to ask about the H1N1 and what the latest is from CDC. Me, I’m not going to worry too much since I got that shot in ’76 and having read the excellent link SHV gave from Sci. American I’m assuming I’ll have some antibodies from that one.
Hee! Sorry Fredster – I know next to nothing about college football. I have not watched the Tigers play, but for some reason have seen Georgia Tech.
May the best team win!
uh-oh MB! You stepped into that one!
And your LSU Tigers are a formidable opponent – not sure my ‘Dawgs will prevail even with the game being held in Athens. It should be a good game.
Now chat…don’t blow smoke! LSU has some big time weaknesses. No running game and Jordan Jeffers (1/4back) is coming along, but…
I read one article where they were quizzing the pollsters on the college teams and one person said it was easy for the first three, but that it was just a toss-up for the ones below that. LSU should not be #4 and when they have that first loss I’ll bet they take a big tumble in the rankings.

Kyl’s philosophy is why today’s insurances don’t pay for birth control, but cover Viagra! He needs it, so he got it for himself.
