MW: Who Will Answer the Nobel Committee’s “Call to Action?”

Posted by: madamab on: October 10, 2009

Guess Who?

Guess Who?

I’ll have some thoughts on the White House Project in a few days. There was a lot of incredible, practical information, and some amazing advice and energy in that room.

In the meantime, I found the State Department’s reaction to Obama’s shocking Nobel Peace Prize to be most fascinating.

First, a signature Hillary quip.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – “Certainly from our standpoint, this gives us a sense of momentum — when the United States has accolades tossed its way, rather than shoes.”

That’s the take of Hillary Clinton’s State Department on President Obama being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, according to her spokesman, Assistant Secretary PJ Crowley.

Yup, Obama sure is getting a lot more love from the international community than Bush. But heck, Bush was going around invading countries and dragging the coalition of the unwilling around the Middle East, blowing up people and dying and stuff. No wonder people were throwing shoes at him!

Crowley’s comments suggested a recognition by the Obama administration that the Nobel Prize was as much an indictment of the Bush administration as it was an effort to praise President Obama’s outreach to improve the US image around the world. (MB: Um, DUH.)

Echoing comments by the White House, Crowley said the award was not just an “affirmation” of the Obama administration’s foreign policy strategy of engagement, but also on its robust foreign policy agenda, which includes non-proliferation, dealing with Iran and North Korea, and pursuing peace in the Middle East.

So far so good. But here comes the kicker:

This “call to action,” Crowley said, will fall primarily on the shoulders of Secretary Clinton and the State Department, who will look “to advance the president’s agenda and confront the challenges of the 21st century.”

Ah ha! So, Hillary will do the work, and Obama will get the credit.

Same as it ever was.

This is an open thread.

I was wondering about that “call to action” when I heard BHO mention it during his statement. Glad to see its going to the person who actually won the votes for the office instead of the empty suit who occupies it. I’m sure she’ll answer this “call” in an outstanding fashion

I have a suggestion recall the award to Pampers and give it to this guy:

Morgan Tsvangirai-Prime Minister of Zimbabwe-MDC (movement for Democratic Change)

He has brought the hope of freedom to his people and when faced with a possible civil war he chose to work with the Zanu-PF saving countless lies in his country.

While Mugabe grasps at power as it slips through his fingers Morgan Tsvangiraiis trying to hold his country (ravaged by 30 years of corruption and mismanagement) together with his bare hands….

Why was he not given the prize for what he has done…Morgan Tsvangirai you deserve this prize th the tenth power more tha Pampers-

Again our president a small and petty man…..

sorry should be:

He has brought the hope of freedom to his people and when faced with a possible civil war he chose to work with the Zanu-PF saving countless lives in his country.

Good points MB- “same as it ever was”.

Still, BO better practice ducking, I see flying shoes in his future too.
Oh wait, that is his skill set- ducking and passing the buck.

mmmm-they gave a peace prize to a leader of a country fighting 2 wars in two countries….

1984 here we come:

War is Peace
Freedom is Slavery
Ignorance is Strength

Fuzzy – great pointa as usual. Did you read Greenwald’s piece yesterday in Salon? He said the same thing – Obama’s forces are killing civilians and children in Aghanistan. Hardly the actions of a man of peace.

Hillary is so Lily Tomlin in “9 to 5,” isn’t she? Oh well, at least she is using that giant brain to make as much of a difference as she can.

Speaking of Obama, for you Noo Yorkaz out there, he has just endorsed Bill Thompson over Michael Bloomberg in the Mayoral race. He basically said, “I’m doing it cause I gotta.” (Thompson is a “D” and AA.) Unenthusiastic though it was, this endorsement may help Thompson’s chances against the billionaire Bloomberg.

My first thought upon the Peace Prize was that it was because of Barack’s choice of SOS. Yup, same as it ever was.

And remember the two wars being fought were both initiated by the US…peacekeepers, uh huh.

he certainly took his time with the endorsement of Thompson. Most NYC-ers have no idea who’s running against Bloomberg! But I guess when you micromanage the gubernatorial election next year, you kinda hafta endorse the democrat in the Mayoral election.

He really threw Bloomie under the bus, actually. Bloomberg has been supporting Obama for quite some time. But after the way Obama has been treating David Paterson, he could not be seen to pass over yet another black NY Democrat.

I hope Thompson wins. I really cannot stand Bloomberg.

I’m so sorry that I haven’t been around, but I’ve been asleep most of the day. I still feel weak and yucky.

hey all it is official all 3 my brothers have publicly declaired that they would rather have Hillary in the white house if it had to be a democrat…

they are repulicans and they have seen the light! or her light…unfortunately they believe Obama is a socialist I tell them he is a DINO…then had to explain the term…small step folks small steps…

Sorry chatblu! Take care of yourself!

Fuzzy – WOW! and…LOL!

I think you deserve the Nobel Prize more than Obama…you surely have the patience of a saint, surrounded by Republicans AND Obama worshipers!
;-)

BTW – I see in our Top News widget that Hillary saved the peace negotiations between Turkey and Armenia. After 100 years, they have finally come to an agreement. Go, Hillary, Go!

geeez a guy doesn’t visit for a month or three and what happens? They paint the house purple.

I followed you home Madamab. Hope that doesn’t make me a stalker ;-)

I do want to know about today so I’ll keep a peeking until I see your post.

Ha! Hi Hampy, good to see you! Will follow you back home – was busy posting for tomorrow.

by the by. I like the new minimalist theme.

Madamab maybe she will get next years Nobel for actually doing something…I cannot believe the Obamanation is not embarassed by this undeserved award

Thanks Hampy! :-) I answered you back at your pad.

Fuzzy – Definitely! As for ObamaNation, I think some of them are embarrassed (maybe not the ones who are online, but the real people we know). DYB said yesterday that none of his Obama-supporting friends were celebrating over it. I still have to check with my relatives and friends. I have a feeling that they feel more like we do than like HuffPo and similar cheerleading sites.

Report from botville. At lobster dinner tonight the Spousal Bot confirmed that his Oliness was totally deserving of the prize and she was just so so proud of him.

ed. note. the bot did not call him his Oliness

LOL Hampy! Ouch, she is a tough one!

Report from non-bot spouse: “Oh, yeah. Obama deserves a Nobel Peace Prize. What the f*ck?”

News flash: Obama promises to end “Don’t ask, don’t tell”.

Well, looks like the Equality March is having some effect, chatblu. But, um…

Obama did not offer specifics on how he would advance the cause of allowing gays to serve openly in the military, or of gay marriage, two areas where his inaction as president have disappointed many of his gay supporters.

Do not let up, LGBT community! You are doing an awesome job. Don’t believe him till you see the repeal of DADT signed, sealed and made law!
