The Blogosphere

The Blogosphere

I’m still processing what I experienced on Friday night at The White House Project. It was quite exciting to be around those 100 women who are considering running for office, to hear the passion, trepidation and hope in their voices. It was also a privilege to hear the wise words of the women who have been successful (and who have failed) in the brutal world of politics. I got a good “get” from the event, too: I will have an interview with a fantastic lady,  New York State Senator Liz Krueger for you in a few weeks, as well. Teh kewl!

I’m also processing my thoughts about blogging, the Interwebs, and what they’re really good for. Seems to me, the best thing we do is opinionating, and organizing for action. We’re trying to do a little of both here at TW now, because my opinions are a little dark these days, and I’m having a really hard time trying to keep a positive attitude with all the idiocy that’s going on.

I mean, what planet was the Nobel Peace Prize Committee on? Even the Obama-supporting pundits I’m reading are having a hard time defending the complete clusterfuckiness of that award. Some, like Glenn Greenwald, are not defending it at all; others seem to be resorting to the tried-and-true tactic of skimming over the obvious ridiculousness of it all, blaming the Republicans and, in the case of the DNC, calling those who criticize the award “siding with terrorists.” (I have to admit, I find that “reporter’s” assertion that Ronald Reagan, Mr. Iran-Contra, should have gotten the award, to be quite hilarious.)

Although I sometimes can chuckle at the absurdity of things, in general, I find I have lost my sense of humor. Obama seems bound and determined to make sure that nothing benefiting the needy ever passes through Congress, all the while (successfully?) blaming the Party who is out of power and who literally can do NOTHING to prevent him from doing anything he wants to do. It is really fucking depressing, and the idea that a Republican President and Congress might be taking over again in four years hardly seems bearable, or a remotely desired outcome.

So, the last thing I want to hear right now is the smug cluckings and crowings of the Right, as Obama swiftly throws any chance of real change out the window with both hands. I’ve had to put up with those jackasses and their lying, criminal, anti-American activities for the past eight years. I don’t want to hear what they have to say, not now, not ever. I will never forgive them for Bush, for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, for the destruction of the Constitution and the economy, and most of all, for being in bed with the corporations who have ruined a far-from-perfect, but well-meaning attempt at democracy, and who have now taken over the Democratic Party leadership as well. If I have been oversensitive about that because of my red-hot hatred towards these bloviating gasbags, I do apologize.

In addition, I can’t take any pleasure in the utterly substance-free nature of our Presidential Product and how he is flushing our country down the toilet by extending what he constantly called “the failed policies of the Bush Administration” on every issue I care about. I would rather have him magically turn into a liberal, experienced, Democratic President and prove me wrong 1,000 times over with a simple wave of a wand. Brrrrinnnnnggg! But no matter how many times I wish for unicorns and ponies, they just aren’t gonna happen.

I don’t care that I told them so. It’s too late, folks. It’s TOO FUCKING LATE. No one will be allowed to primary Obama in 2012. You think he’s going to let go of being President in four years? A guy who accepts a Nobel Prize that the least-clued-in four-year-old knows he doesn’t deserve? PLEASE!  So, the way things stand right now, our choice in 2012 will be either Obama, who is  a DINO, or some Republican f*ckwad like Mitt “Magic Underwear” Romney. Um, hooray?! Which do I pick, vanilla or white chocolate? Strawberry or raspberry? What’s the fucking difference? Nothing is going to change. The corporations will still have a stranglehold on our country. The gap between rich and poor will continue to grow. Women’s rights will continue to be eroded until they completely disappear. Americans will get dumber and dumber as science is replaced with religion and programs like “No Child Left Behind” remove any critical thinking from core public school curriculum. Meanwhile, cynical manipulators on both sides of the aisle will continue to whip us all into frenzies over nonsense while America becomes a Third World Country.

See? I toldja. Dark, man! Who the hell wants to read that?

So, what to do till I find my snark again? Well, I am trying to find my inspiration elsewehere. Specifically, in action. That is why chatblu and I have been posting some think pieces, and some action pieces. I’m hoping that somehow, somewhere, we’re doing some good; that people will get their feet in the street, will meet with other people, and start building a REAL opposition to the status quo. We were helpless against Bush, in my opinion, because we expended most of our energies in getting Democrats elected. Now that that’s done, and we’re still not getting what we want, maybe we will be motivated to join with other like-minded lefties and build a critical mass of protesters that, in time, will usher in REAL change.

Or maybe I’m just opinionating.

Ah well.

This is an open thread.

Madamab here is something that should put a smile on your face….

Just saw this bumpersticker in Gville no less….

“I AM STILL A MEMBER OF THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTSUIT”

HRC still has legions of fans I bet all over the country made me smile

Report from the Equality March: Some believe Obama’s claims that he is going to end DADT and DOMA, and some don’t.

Some gay-rights advocates said they already have heard Obama’s promises and now want a timeline. Cleve Jones, a pioneer activist and creator of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, said Saturday that Obama delivered a brilliant speech, but he added “it lacked the answer to our most pressing question, which is when.”

“He repeated his promises that he’s made to us before, but he did not indicate when he would accomplish these goals and we’ve been waiting for a while now,” said Jones, national co-chair of a major gay-rights rally scheduled for Sunday on the National Mall.

Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network said he was encouraged to hear Obama’s pledge but added “an opportunity was missed tonight.” He said his group “was disappointed the president did not lay out a timeline and specifics for repeal.”

Obama also called on Congress to repeal the Defense Of Marriage Act, which limits how state, local and federal bodies can recognize partnerships and determine benefits. He also called for a law to extend benefits to domestic partners.

He expressed strong support for the HRC agenda of ending discrimination against gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people but stopped short of laying out a detailed plan for how to get there.

“My expectation is that when you look back on these years you will look back and see a time when we put a stop against discrimination … whether in the office or the battlefield,” Obama said.

This is very interesting…he called on Congress to end DOMA and used a lot of passive voice. Sounds like he is trying to have it both ways, as usual.

Awww, Fuzzy! You are a doll.
:-D

Madamab public financing of all candidates that run for office we will have a “freedom tax” on corporations equal to 2.5% of their average net market value for the year as determined by there daily closings on there listed exchanges.

Individuals can make a $ 500.00 taxdeductable contribution to as many candidates or parties as they choose up to $ 500.00 cap no more this money must be tracable to the source. This amount will be adjusted anually for inflation or deflation as determined by the CPI.

Any candidate who accepts money from a nontraceable source like a prepaid debit card will be penalized at the rate of 125% of the total of contribuions that the candidate accepts that way.

Any state that does not pass comparable legislation will forfiet 1/2 of there fedral highway education and non federal mandated funding until they comply based on their funding for the current fiscal year adjusted for inflation and program growth.

Funds collected by the corporate tax will be distributed by district based on ave voter turnout for the past 4 election cycles.

The states will be able to draw on these funds for there elections if they also pass concurrent equal campaign finance legislation.

sound good? Madamab?

I think this would fund all the campaigns in the USA Federal State and Local….it would also end corporation influence pedaling and make corporate executive do their jobs make money for their stockholders and not try to get an advantage through the legislative process.

I am a capatilist I always have felt american business wastes to much money resources and time on the legislative process. I think it is time for business to get to the business of running their businesses. They should do this for the benifit of their share holders their country and their own MBA executive hides.

FYI the total value of all listed corporations on all exchanges is about $ 20 trillion! it would pay for campaign finance and retire the national debt pretty quickly.

It would also exempt all non listed mom and pop corporations giving them a chance against the big dogs like Walmart…

We need to start using the Tax code to level the playing field for all businesses!

Fuzzy – one of the things I learned Friday night is that NYC has one of the best public financing setups in the country. If you donate $25 to a candidate running for city office, the city will match up to 6x that amount!

Maybe campaign finance reform can “trickle up” from the cities to the counties, to the states, and finally up through the federal government. Lord knows, it’s not going to trickle down. Our Congresscritters and Preznit are far too in love with corporate money.

Gotta get going – later all! Enjoy this lovely fall day.

I read on another site that the paperwork to be filled out to be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize is sent out in September. This means that this was in the works either before the election or shortly after. I think that this was sent in by someone behind the scenes (Soros anyone?) just after the election (no one would believe a nomination for someone who lost) — and I think it was planned as a final topper to all the great things they were sure would have happened by now. I am sure that if things had worked as they had planned, the stimulus would have cut unemployment to under 8 percent, they would already have health care signed sealed and delivered and would be finishing up cap and trade. On the international scene, Isreal would have said “Of course we will stop increasing the settlements,” the Palestinians would have come to the bargaining table and a final solution to that problem would be almost done. Iran, having heard one of his great speeches would be talking with us about closing down their nuclear program, and China and Russia would be in the midst of joining us in disarmament talks. Then, just on schedule, Chicago would be named and the site of the 2016 Olympics and to top it all off and finish the year off right, Obama would win the Nobel Peace Prize. Unfortunately, none of those earlier things actually occurred, and Obama is standing with egg on his face for winning an award without actually doing anything.

You may just have something there, Lahana.

Regarding the 2012 election, it really makes me sad that this will be my daughter’s first opportunity to vote. She’s very troubled that she doesn’t want to vote for either party so I hope an appealing Independent or third party candidate is available. She’s already getting mail from the DNC, and she’s only sixteen. It’s interesting that they found her. When she contributed to HRC, we lived in another state. They’re tracking down the kids who will be eligible to vote in 2012. They won’t get her vote.

Lahana – that makes the most sense of anything I’ve read so far. I guess this time, Axelrod & Co. rolled out the marketing campaign before the product had been fully tested. ;-)

Janicen – that is sad, and kind of scary that they found her! Or maybe, just maybe, something good will happen and she’ll be able to vote for someone she actually likes. Wouldn’t that be loverly?

you have something there Lahana….it makes sense and now Obama taking an award he hasn’t earned makes him petty and small looking once again.
