Recently, I watched David Gregory interview Secretary of the Treasury Tim Geithner on Meet The Press. Gregory became incredulous as Geithner explained that large financial institutions needed to take more risks. WTF??? Did we not just bail them out of a similar situation?? I know that my memory is not what it once was, but it seems that we really did take innumerable billions out of the taxpayers’ – past, present and future- collective pockets in order to remedy the fallout from such behavior.
Barney Frank had introduced some legislation that would seemingly ameliorate the situation, but apparently it has more holes than a colander and would not affect the most egregious of the offenders one iota, as it would permit any number of secret deals that would seemingly not be in favor of the general population. Dylan Ratigan posted a rant on Huffington Post that he continued on “Morning Meeting,” in which he stated unequivocally that Turbo Tax Tim must go. What really got his attention was Geithner’s assertion that if unlimited pay and bonuses are curtailed, the taxpayer will never get their money back. Hmmm, let’s see……unlimited money and secret deals is giving me an uncomfortable sense of déjà vu.
Even Alan Greenspan recently admitted that TBTF concerns should be broken into smaller groups, and that the economy could not tolerate another similar upheaval. Thanks, Big Al, even if you are a number of days and an incredible number of billions of dollars short in this particular calculation.
Ratigan further asserts that the administration is at a point where they no longer deserve the benefit of the doubt, and I agree. The time has come to cut our losses, and stop throwing good trillions after bad. Geithner is in this up to his neck, and his ultra-fragile credibility is a thing of the past. If the average person has any hope whatsoever of seeing a light at the end of the tunnel, it’s time for Tim to go. If he continues with his plan, the only light any average American will see is that of an oncoming train.
This is an open thread.
But, but, shouldn’t we send them even more money and then maybe it will pay off and then we will all be richer and the world will be a better place?
Sorry, I just had to. . .
He can go ahead and Whitney.
Thanks, chatblu! Go Yanks! But ya know, I am not quite a big enough fan to think it’s “my” victory. LOL!
Anywho, on topic: Guys like Geithner, at best, are deluded neoliberal faith-based economists whose belief in trickle-down is unshakeable, and at worst, are cynical reverse Robin Hoods whose goal is to transfer the wealth (as Obama said) from the poor to the rich.
I’m not sure which one Turbo Tax Timmy is.

Hi, TRK!
By the way – women’s reproductive rights thrown under the bus by fundiegelicals in the House once again.
The House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, a supporter of abortion rights, has little choice but to heed the concerns of members of her caucus who oppose abortion. As many as 40 House Democrats, a potentially decisive bloc, have threatened to oppose the bill without tighter restrictions on abortion.
Over all, the House bill would provide coverage to 36 million people at a cost of $1.1 trillion over 10 years. (MB: Epic, massive fail. That’s about 10% of Americans. Medicare for All would cover EVERYONE and save hundreds of billions of dollars.)
The bill would establish a new government insurance plan, which would compete with private insurers around the country. Under the bill as now written, the secretary of health and human services could decide whether the public insurance option covers abortions.
In an address to Congress on Sept. 9, President Obama said, “Under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions.” But House Democrats have had difficulty translating that principle into enforceable legislative language.
Gee, I wonder why? Could it be because abortion IS LEGAL IN THIS COUNTRY??
This is such f*cking bullsh*t. The fundies comprise about 10% of this country’s population, and they are ruining EVERYTHING for the rest of us normal people.
I want this health care monstrosity DEFEATED NOW. NOW. NOW.
Click here to send faxes and call your Congresscritter in support of HR 676, Medicare for All.
This is a very juvenile observation, I know, but I can’t look at Timmy without thinking of Beavis. The similarities are uncanny.
Great post, chatblu. Are you hearing any murmurings that he may be asked to leave?
Yup, no one seems to be calling for his resignation even after that performance on MTP.
I guess Turbo Tax is just THAT important to the wealth transfer process.
Ah yes. Remember how he was supposed to be such a great pick for Homeland Security in the Bush 2nd term? A blatant criminal, hand-picked by Rudy Giuliani. Whoops! They got Skeletor instead, who wasn’t great either, of course.
I wonder if Kerik is going to implicate Rudy in his testimony, or has already? A while ago, I heard he was singing like a bird.
Oh my goodness, Chat! That’s horrible!
congradulations to the New York Yankees on their 27th world series win….
