Action Wednesday: We Did It!?

Posted by chatblu on November 11, 2009

Let's Organize...for Ourselves!

Let's Organize...for Ourselves!

Goodness, gracious!  I got an email from Tim Kaine, who is falling all over himself with delight:

Chatblu-

We did it. With House passage of health reform last weekend, we took a huge step toward providing affordable options to those without insurance, providing greater security for those who are already covered, and reducing costs for families and small businesses.

There have been many attempts in the last nearly 100 years, but Saturday’s vote was the first time a chamber of Congress succeeded in passing comprehensive health reform. As President Obama wrote after the vote, “This is history.”

But now we need to keep the pressure on — and one of the best ways to show our support is to fill local newspapers across the country with letters about why we need reform now.

Take a few minutes to write a letter to the editor in support of health reform.

http://my.democrats.org/page/speakout/posthouseLTE

Your letter can tell a personal story about why health reform matters to you and your family, or explain how important it is that our representatives stand with their constituents and not the special interests.

After the House vote, there are three big steps left, and it’s going to be a fight the whole way. Soon, the Senate will vote on its version of the bill, then there will be a round of negotiations to combine the two versions, and finally, each chamber will take a final vote.

It’s going to be an uphill battle, but my experiences as governor have taught me that moments like this weekend’s vote serve to motivate and spark action. When one chamber takes the first step, it encourages the other to quickly follow suit.

This is among the most critical issues facing our country today. I’m sure that years from now, we’ll all look back on this as one of the most important fights of our life.

Let’s make sure we give everything we can to keep the pressure on and win this thing:

http://my.democrats.org/HouseLTE

Sincerely,

Governor Tim Kaine
Chairman

Anything less than delirious with joy is simply unacceptable to Governor Kaine. In fact, however, the whole damned thing is unacceptable.  I agree with both the Governor and the President:  this is history, but they seem to feel that it’s in the sense of a historic benchmark, while I tend to believe that it is a return to the 1960’s.  (Not that the 60’s were entirely bad –just the part about backstreet and do-it-yourself abortions.)

“But”, says the chairman, “we need to keep the pressure on”.  Happy to comply, Governor.  You should right about now be feeling unprecedented pressure, not only from us bitter knitters, but from disillusioned KoolAid sippers as well.  He urges us to use the link provided to send letters to the editor, and I have taken him up on it.  Now, I can’t begin to tell you if these go directly to the local papers.  If they do, he is a complete fool.  Nonetheless, I would urge everyone to utilize the link (if it doesn’t work, the address above his signature will take you there as well) and write a letter expressing how you really feel about this.  So much the better if some Democratic party clerk gets to read a blue million letters expressing displeasure at the new, improved health care program.

Governor Kaine admits that this will be an uphill battle – oh, yeah.  If we have anything to say about it, it may resemble Mount Denali.  He feels that this should be a call to action.  I vote that we oblige him.  Please pass the word, and let those letters issue forth.  He says that this should “motivate and spark action”.  Make him happy, ladies and gentlemen.  Let’s roll.

This is an open thread.

Great idea, chat! I’ll send out my letter and put in the text in a bit. Work is very busy today.

Let’s also remember our Veterans today. Thank you all so very much for your service to this country.

Catholic Bishops played a role in the healthcare bill Nancy Pelosi cobbled together – shocking, right?

Yes, DYB – I mentioned that a couple of days ago.

Whatever happened to the separation of Church and State? Guess a bunch of guys in dresses have more control over our Congresscritters than we do!

  4. chatblu said

I heard on one of the talk shows that the clergy kneecapped Obama right after Ted Kennedy’s services.

  5. madamab said

    Chatblu – Details please!

  6. chatblu said

Apparently, after the memorial service, the archbishop approached Obama regarding the church’s feelings with regard to health care = pro-public option, anti-abortion to the max. I forget which show it was on, but the commentator said that Obama had cut deals with Big Insurance, Big Pharma, and holy mother Rome, and that explained the convulutions of the House bill.

  7. madamab said

    Ah! I’m sure that’s right.

Your use of the word “kneecapped,” however, implies that Obama would have done something different had the bishops not approached him. I don’t believe he would have, personally. He is not pro-choice in any meaningful sense of the word.

Nancy Pelosi, however, was definitely and assuredly kneecapped by her own Party. She was unable to pass the bill without bowing to Stupak and his pathetic coterie of woman-hating DINOs. It was either lose the semblance of passing something “historic,” or pass a POS, prohibitively expensive bill that takes health insurance coverage AWAY from women who already have it, with a “public option” that will most likely only be available to between 6 and 10 million people.

She should have chosen option A, but that would have cost her her job.

  8. chatblu said

Well, Clyburne stated unequivocally that Axis Nancy caved to the Stupid Amendment for 2 lousy votes.

  9. madamab said

Without them, she would have had 218 votes, which does not account for any wavering at the last minute. She wanted to make as certain as possible that the bill would pass, obviously.

    The whole thing stinks!

That will be the end of a long tradition of Georgia girls marrying Supply Corps Officers. Three from my sorority that I know of married SCO’s. As they had the only full-service bar in Clark County, which otherwise had beer only, they were great to party with.

I’m having quite a day on an elist of Viet vets, including one I knew from childhood who started it and lets me lurk — and sometimes post, as an ex-wife of a Viet vet who also witnessed what war can do to our poor guys. So today I sent them a url to a song that sums it up so well, as I think about so many names I knew who now are, as the song says, Names on a Wall: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bynVL4XezXg

And to Obama, I sing it again, as we sang it then — when I was an antiwar protester and hadn’t met my Viet vet spouse yet:

Hey Chat: Does GA play Auburn this weekend? If so, do you know if it’s on the teevee?

  28. madamab said

Fredster @25 – Oh, I’ll bet. He is now infected with Democratic Cooties!

  29. Fredster said

MB: Whatever Mr. Cao may personally believe he had to vote for it to have a chance at reelection. He won Dollar Bill Jefferson’s seat and it’s a minority-majority district. And actually I don’t look to see him reelected. He won because the AA vote was split between Jefferson and several other AA’s in the Dem primary. Since it **is** the district that represents New Orleans, I expect the AA vote will come together behind a strong AA candidate in 2010. Still it was interesting to see a representative vote for what his constituents wanted.

  30. madamab said

Fredster – Hmmm. I guess the constituents of that District actually have some influence on their Congresscritters.

That must be a good feeling for them. I wonder how that feels?

  31. Fredster said

Oh geez, I wouldn’t know; I’ve got Charlie Melancon. Although he’s been good for the district post-Katrina, he’s a blue dog and R.C. and I kinda knew he wasn’t going to be for it.

The doc sez the only way to fix the situation is to drain some blood out of his weenie and turns around with this humongous needle and Jason just about passes out just from the sight of it. As the scene fades you hear Jason give this blood-curdling scream! 8O I crossed my legs tightly watching that scene!

^^^^^^ And according to the article, they aren’t using stem cells, just regular cells

    But wait!

Atala is hoping the procedure will work with people, perhaps starting with adult men who have had damage to their organs.

“Patients with congenital anomalies, penile cancer, traumatic penile injury, and some types of organic erectile dysfunction could benefit from this technology in the future,” the team wrote in the report. The process takes six weeks from beginning to end, he said, and there is reason to believe a penis grafted onto a baby would grow with the child.

Atala hopes the approach will work with other organs. “We have made clitoral tissue in the past,” he said. “We have extensive work going on with kidneys and livers.”

Atala’s team started their experiments with replacement bladders grown from patients’ cells. Patients fitted with artificial bladders have been enjoying good function for 10 years now, Atala said.

I guess there’s some purpose to this after all.

Good grief. I just saw Nancy on the teevee declaring joyously that the Health Care Bill would be a Christmas gift for America. Bleeeeeaaaach. Keep the receipt, Nancy, and point me toward “Returns and Exchanges.” This one just doesn’t fit at all well.

OMG, just had to delurk when I read “Priapism” – few people inside or outside the medical profession even know about it.
My BIL has it – it is chronic, embarrassing and painful. Once upon a time, he thought I was Ann Landers, so I heard all the details about the problem, the treatments, the failures and the further problems. I’m not trying to downplay my BIL’s discomfort by any means – but I’m not sure I’m the best person that he should be using as a confidant as I’ve been celibate (by choice) since my son was born – twenty years ago! BTW, my BIL is 78 years old, and still has major problems with this condition.
I also agree that more research and more money is filtered into male “reproductive” problems – read erection, ejaculation, stimulae, prostate etc is acceptable, when the majority of the population is female, but that’s just me – a dried up old c@nt who can’t get a man. Never mind I don’t want one, unless Fuzzy or Fredster wants to come up here and move in.

  52. Fredster said

HT do NOT berate yourself like that!!! :x

Thank you for the offer but it’s tooo cooold in Canada for me. I’d turn into a Popsicle!!

  53. chatblu said

I’m with you, Fredster. A lifetime in the South has caused me to view “a nice day” as 82. One of my friends just called and told me to turn on MSNBC. Tweety and some guy named Peter Beinart were explaining patiently to Nancy keegan that she may just have to be happy with what she’s got. Sort of like when Frederick Douglas teamed up with Susan B. Anthony to work on the vote. He apparently wasn’t clear on why she was not thrilled when black males got the vote, and women didn’t. Yes, the passage of black male suffrage (Universal Health Care) was (is) a moral victory, but leaving women (women) behind (again!) was (is) not.

  54. chatblu said

Here’s a link regarding the depth of the RC church on the bill.

  55. madamab said

Wow, HT – when you delurk you do it with style!

I’m sorry about your BIL’s problem. It must be very difficult to deal with, especially at his age.

And Fredster, that is actually very encouraging. Although the fundies will probably find some way to make it “unholy.”

  56. HT said

Chatblu, so 140 years after Anthony broke with Douglas, women are still fighting. What is wrong with that picture. Yeah, I know, I’m preaching to the choir. RE Chris Mathews, and his ilk, they need to overdose on Viagra and save the female population from their predatory practices.
IN addition, I am disgusted (yes I know, I disguise it well) by the pat on the head reaction of the media – there there, you’ll get you day. Right. 140 years after we should have, and women conceded to men, and have continued to concede to men, you expect me to believe that we will ever get our day? You think I’m senile? Stupid? Unable to connect dots?
Ah sheeit, this brings back too many memories of my time in the trenches fighting against the smugness of male perceived superiority patting me on the head. Throughout my career, I was advised, so many times I cannot count, that if I were more politically astute (read sucking up to the big guys regardless of how stupid their decision were), I could rise much higher in the organization. I had so many carrots dangled (sadly, I never never realized how valuable I was until after I left, and had so many calls and offers, I had to change my number). How many other women have had that experience? I’ll tell you, plenty. My friend, who was one of the driving forces behind the 911 system, was given a so long, nice to have known you package – they had a great MBA type to take her place. she had been instrumental in implementation across Canada and down into the States. It hurt her so badly, that the PTB didn’t recognize her contribution, and chose to buy her out, rather than let her finish her project, that she refused to have anything to do with the project afterward.

  57. madamab said

    Preach it sister HT!

I’ll tell you something. I think this bill is such an obvious slap in the face to liberal and pro-choice women that we are really, really starting to get angry. And like the Ents, when we are roused, we are absolutely terrifying.

That’s what all the condescension and dismissal is about. They are TERRIFIED of us.

I say, let’s give them a reason to be scared.

Hee! I finally sent my letter. I do not think Tim Kaine would approve of what I said.

Subject: A Bill that Made History

President Obama recently claimed that the passage of the House Health Care Reform Bill had made history. It did, indeed. It was the most hostile and oppressive bill passed by a Democratic majority that I have seen in my lifetime.

This bill not only refused to cover basic wellness exams for women, but it also refused to fund any abortions whatsoever. The Stupak-Pitts Amendment went further: if women who already have coverage for abortion are eligible for federal funding and accept it, or if their insurance plans accept that funding, then their existing coverage will be stripped away.

This bill is reprehensible and discriminatory in the extreme. As a liberal feminist woman, I am appalled and disgusted at the Democratic Party’s willingness to throw millions of women under the bus for the sake of political gain.

I will never support this bill, and I will never support the Democrats again until they start standing up for the women who have supported them for so many years, desperately hoping that things will get better for us.

We’ve had enough hope. Now, it’s time for change.
