Just Another Week In Washington

Just Another Week In Washington

It’s been quite a week in Washington. President Obama has been talking a lot, and as usual, both sides of his mouth appear to be working quite well.

At Real Clear Politics, for example, it has dawned on some that Obama’s oft-repeated assurance that “if you like your health insurance, you can keep it” would not be true under the current Health Whatever bill. Unlike the author of the article I’ve linked, I don’t think this admission is stunning at all. In fact, I don’t know where the hell this guy has been for the past several months, since Stupak-Pitts and its evil twin in the Senate explicitly strip women of their abortion coverage if they (or their insurance companies! or their employers!) DARE to take one penny of federal dollars to defray their health insurance costs.  Way to be on top of it, dude. Hey, do you think the Giants will ever win the Super Bowl?

The Supreme Court made a spectacularly bad decision regarding campaign financing, ruling that money was, in fact, speech, and thus corporations could not be restricted from “speaking” as loudly as they wanted for any politician in America. Hooray, now the corporations can buy politicians outright instead of using that quaint tactic, “bundling,” to group together smaller contributions to make one large, yet legal, “bundle.” Obama gently wagged his finger about that decision during the State of the Union, which apparently was simply unheard of. Trust the Village to focus on the alleged incivility of Obama’s comment rather the substance of it. Where, where is my fainting couch?

Meanwhile, Chris Matthews made quite an incredible statement about Obama’s alleged post-raciality. Apparently this mythical quality was so strong that it made the yellow-haired motormouth forget the President was black for about an hour. Yes, shockingly, Matthews was able to look past Obama’s skin color for 60 whole minutes on Wednesday! One wonders how he was able to do any reasoned analysis of Obama’s positions and qualifications during the election of 2008, then, since he seemed to be so focused on skin color that he couldn’t forget it before now. (snort) I can’t help wondering: If Matthews were a guy who didn’t tingle at Obama’s every utterance and invest him with beliefs and personality traits Obama simply does not possess, would Tweety still have a job at MSNBO?

In other news, we’re putting lots of missiles in the Persian Gulf in case Iran really has nukes. It seems to me we might be overreacting a tad, however. I mean, the evidence we’ve been using seems a bit…dodgy. Ah well – we’ve gotta feed that military-industrial complex, and we do it by being the biggest arms dealer in the world, selling lots of countries lots of weapons. So, even if Iran doesn’t have nukes, we still get to make lots of money pretending they do. It’s a win-win!

And finally…this is a blogroll call! Our blogroll is out of date, and needs to be expanded. Which sites do you visit that we don’t have listed? Which ones have gone to the dark (wingnut) side? We’d also like to add some good news sources to the list. I like Common Dreams and Truthout, now that the Kool-Aid has worn off; also, Raw Story.

Put your recommendations out there in comments, folks. It’s a big blogosphere, and we’d like to give traffic where traffic is due.

This is an open thread.

I vote for both Common Dreams and Truthout.

I like “Naked Capitalism”. I admit, however, that I often have no idea WTH they are talking about(!).
The only economics class I ever took was “Soviet and Eastern-Bloc Economic Systems”, which has proven to be almost as useful as having studied the migration patterns of the dodo bird.

I lurk at the Daily Howler sometimes.

I always liked Daily Howler, though I haven’t visited in some time. Somerby was obviously an Obama supporter, but he didn’t jump on any anti-Clinton bandwagons that I recall and he even occasionally defended McCain.

And – it’s really amazing that Tweety still has a job. Well, maybe not really. But the mind still boggles that his statement was deemed acceptable because if those exact words were uttered by, say, Chuck Scarborough (let’s not even go as far to the right as Fatso Rush), Chuck would have been carried out of the studio by an angry mob. But Maddow and Olbermann didn’t even blink.

It’s Rodeo week-end, and I’m gone for the day. BBL.

Hey all,

Good suggestions for the blog roll. Keep ‘em coming!

I’m doing my finances. How exciting! :-p

Well I read Suzie Madrak over at Suburban Guerrilla and also Taibi at Trueslant. It probably wouldn’t hurt to have Krugman’s blog. Howler’s already been listed. Guess that’s it.

Sounds good, Fredster. Thanks!

OMG! Edge has this up on her site so I had to bring it over here. Too funny!!

She hasn’t been posting quite as much because of internet access issues, but I love Red Queen. She has a great way of cutting to the chase on a real-people level. Refreshing, after suffering through what many blowhards (oops! I mean access bloggers) have to say.

And I forgot Black Agenda Report. I usually go read a post there when someone else references it. My bad, really.

Thanks, guys! I’m loving the recommendations.

Fredster, we have BAR over on the left side of the blog. I find them a pretty action-oriented site, so that’s where I put it. So no worries, we’ve got it.

The blogroll is for more newsy-talky blogs. :-)

I am going to be going out for the rest of the afternoon and evening. Play nice while your blogmamas are out having fun, m’kay?

Oops!

“…if those exact words were uttered by, say, Chuck Scarborough…”

DYB, I think you meant *Joe* Scarborough. Chuck is the longtime news anchor on Channel 4, the local NBC station in NYC.

OT:

I don’t know if you guys have seen this. I posted it up on my site and thought some of the great writers here may be able to add some of their own thoughts to it here….

“The truth of the matter is if you look at the course of the year, overwhelmingly the majority of it actually was on C=Span because it was taking place in Congressional hearings in which you guys were participating.”

SAY WHAT????

The stones on this man! He actually believes this poop!

For news — BBC & the Independent — often they do better jobs of covering US news and International news that the US corporate Media.

NWRain@17: Add in Reuters too and for the same reason.

Yes, I meant Joe! Oops.

So apparently the new Senator from Mass. is pro-choice – more or less:

Home from the rodeo, and ready to wash all this dust away. See y’all tomorrow,

There’s a lot of truth here but I think he’s overly harsh on Bill Clinton. Still, worth a read:

Everyone is beginning to smell the bullshit:
