So, have you heard about this new women’s organization called EVE – Equal Visibility Everywhere? Here’s what they’re about:
EVE is a group of people committed to creating Equal Visibility Everywhere for women. We are a brand-new (March 2010) not-for-profit dedicated to achieving gender parity in the symbols and icons of the United States.
Our Mission
EVE will work to change the culture and face of America one symbol at a time. We will:
- encourage state legislatures to add more statues of women to National Statuary Hall;
- suggest women for the U.S. Postal Service to commemorate on stamps;
- propose that municipalities name streets and buildings after prominent female citizens, and persuade school systems nationwide to increase the number of schools named after women;
- encourage the government and private sector to include women in the celebrations of our nation’s heritage;
- analyze the gender ratio of monuments and memorials on the local, state, and national level, and encourage greater representation of women;
- advocate the full and fair treatment of women and women’s history in our nation’s museums;
- urge our government to include more women’s images on our coinage and to print a second set of paper money featuring images of great American women; and
- educate the private sector regarding the lack of female images in media representations.
If this sounds good to you, please do go to the site and join up.
I’m so pooped, I don’t have nuthin’ else today. Hope you had a good weekend. Tawk amongst yerselves!
Cool, RD62! I hope they can make a difference.
Did you all hear that the new health Whatever bill contains $250 million in funding for abstinence-only education?
More of our taxpayer money wasted on policies that actively cause teenage pregancy and STDs. Hip hip hooray for our “feminist” president!
“Abstinence Only” programs DO NOT WORK!
It is not only irresponsible but also naive to believe that teenagers can, or will for that matter, suppress the most powerful of human urges!
I believe the explosion in teen pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases has an a lot to do with these so called “Abstinence” programs.
Instead of teaching our teens and young adults on ways to protect themselves with contaception in the event they choose ( and you know many will. It’s human nature ) to explore their sexuality, the powers that be push the “Abstinence pony at every opportunity and that has consequences. A child is born when neither “CHILD” is emotionally or mature enough to care for that life or worse,and as we all know too well, it can also lead to some dangerous critters hitching a ride.
I believe that we should teach our children ( both sexes ) that abstinence is good to aspire to but in the event they choose to “Explore” the their passions ( and it is irresponsible to think that many wont ) that they first understand that it’ not all about getting your groove on.
As I told my children many times…..One night of spanky can sometimes lead to a lifetime of misery if you catch one of the many hitchhikers ( diseases ) that sometimes tag along. Also, if your not ready to be a mama or daddy….THINK before you dance!
Amen, RD62!
There is plenty of evidence that abstinence-only education is harmful to the efforts to prevent teen pregnancy and STDs. In fact, that evidence was cited as a reason why, in 2009, there was no money spent on abstinence-only education at all.
But, the raving fundie lunatics will have their way, and Obama is only too glad to give in to them, it seems.
