Is it Friday yet?

Posted by: bluelyon on: April 29, 2010

It all started on Monday when my week got tossed upside down at work. Then Sweetie came home and told me that, yes, the ax had fallen on some guys in his departments at the school district. I finally understand how you were feeling last year, he said, referencing the three RIFs my company went through and the sadness that overwhelms. I can’t help him except to tell him I love him and to be there. Still, I think he’s worrying himself sick, and in turn, that worries me.

In the meantime, we’ve got Arizona going crazy.

And in Oklahoma, women seeking an abortion will now be subject to government-mandated object rape. Ah yes, the 90% male-dominated Oklahoma state legislature has overriden the governor’s veto and determined that it is in a woman’s best interest to be be forced to undergo an ultrasound in order to obtain an abortion.

Oklahoma has two new abortion laws today, one said to be among the toughest in the nation because it requires a woman to have an ultrasound — with the monitor in her view — and to hear a detailed description of the fetus before having an abortion.

The ultrasound has to the kind that will allow for the best view of the developing embryo and in the first trimester, when most abortions are done, that is a transvaginal ultrasound. I’ve had one. Willingly. To screen for possible cancer. It’s not fun. Basically, you’ve got a large dildo-like probe pushed up your vagina up against your cervix. Can you move this way? Now, lift your hips. Okay, now turn this way. I’m sorry, some pressure now. Ugh.

Just thinking that there will be women who are forced through this procedure after they’ve already made the very difficult decision to terminate a pregnancy for whatever reason, be it finances, timing, or as the result of a rape or incest, or whatever reason she determines, makes me physically ill. But it gets worse. Not only do doctors doing this ultrasound have to describe what they see to the helpless woman lying there, See? There is the spine, the feet, the toes. Oh look, there’s the heart beating, the ultrasound monitor screen must be turned toward the woman so that the woman can see it all. Finally, doctors do not have to describe any defects they see. Got that? The law frees doctors to engage in medical malpractice in order to advance an ideological agenda.

The other law forbids women who have disabled babies from suing a doctor for withholding information about birth defects discovered while the fetus was in the womb. Backers say it tries to prevent women from discriminating against disabled fetuses, but opponents feel it makes getting an abortion harder.

Obama is all up in arms about Arizona’s new law. Hell, he was all ready to move immigration “reform” to the front burner until Lindsay Graham had his snit fit.

What has Obama said about Oklahoma’s new law?

Crickets.

Peter Daou (Hey Ms. magazine, THIS is what a FEMINIST looks like) lets loose:

Reflecting on Oklahoma’s law, two things strike me:

The thrust of the measure is about women, not babies. In other words, the underlying assumption is that women want to do something uninformed and frivolous and the state has to ‘educate’ them and shame them out of it. I think it’s safe to extrapolate from Oklahoma to the broader anti-choice movement. There are justified ethical concerns about ending a budding life, but it seems that this is primarily about assuming women are murderous, immoral fetus-killers who must be stopped at all costs.

The pervasive abuse of girls and women across the globe and the entrenched sexism in our society supports the argument that this is more about suppressing women’s rights than protecting new life. If men were the ones carrying babies, do you really think Oklahoma would enact such laws? Do you think doctors would be gunned down for providing a legal service? Do you think rape and incest victims would be further humiliated? For some reason, I doubt it.

Which brings me to the second reason I believe this is more about women than babies. The virulence of so many in the anti-choice movement is matched by a corresponding silence about the brutalization of girls and women around the world. Here in the U.S., there are nearly 17,000 homicides a year due to intimate partner violence. In places like Congo, the monstrosities committed against girls and women defy imagination – I’ve chronicled a few of the horrors in previous posts.

It’s hypocritical, to say the least, for someone to fight tooth and nail against a woman’s right to choose — under the idea they are protecting “life” — while standing by as “life” is slashed, mutilated, burned, raped, mangled, hacked, and strangled out of women and girls in every corner of the planet.

But the bay-bees!!!

Backers say it tries to prevent women from discriminating against disabled fetuses…

By the time a woman has made the decision to have an abortion and is already at the clinic, what difference would it make to her…? Oh, forget it. I am so shocked and dumbfounded by this monstrous law that, I cannot even think clearly enough to articulate my horror.

That a woman must endure unnecessary object rape prior to a legal medical procedure just to comply with someone else’s religious beliefs is torture, pure and simple. We are torturing women in this country and it’s legal.

Such an epiphany, Peter!

Outrageous and absurd !! Don’t these lunatic pols know that insureres do not pay for transvaginal ultrasound? Early pregnancy ultrasounds are routinely only external.

The fact that they all just voted on insurance coverage and should know what is and is not included makes it look more like grandstanding. In fact, have they considered that the reason transvaginal ultrasound is not performed during pregnancy is that it could induce labor.

(Head is banging against wall here…brains are falling out)

Careful there, BBS.

BBS – it isn’t your brains that are falling out. It’s the a-holes in Oklahoma.

This comment might get kicked to moderation — but — my first gut reaction to this outrageous new misogynistic law is that ALL the Male politicians who voted for this should have a huge over sized dildo shoved up their a-hole — plus the jerks should PAY$$ for the experience.

Evangelical wing-dings major objective is to control women.

Sci-Fi again has taken these sorts of laws to logical dramatic conclusions — “Total Recall 2070″ has a story about the control of women’s bodies. The right to have a baby is on a lottery system in the year 2070 and genetic tests determine if the baby can be carried to term. If a woman in a territory gets pregnant then genetic tests are preformed at birth and the baby can be removed immediately. Perhaps the baby has genes that the state wants to “control”.

WHEN the state can control what a women does with her body — then it can eventually have absolute control over the woman. “Dune” also follows control of women to a “logical” conclusion.

NWR – My son-in-law thinks that these men should be forced to have a urethral catherization any time they want to “waste their seed.”

I was thinking along a similar vein, NWR. Men who want vasectomies should be required to have a scope inserted into their rectums to have their prostates described to them, just in case the vasectomy ever has an adverse affect on the prostate. After all, I think I remember some studies linking vasectomies to prostate cancer and maybe the silly men are acting impetuously and not thinking about their prostates. It’s our responsibility to educate them.

Darnit BL, announce it when you have a new post up! Some of us are Blackberry blogging here! :-D

Peter Daou has always been excellent on women’s rights, but he hit this one perfectly.

Yes, the religious right believes that women are evil because the Bible tells them so. There was a talking snake! Really there was! And women are made out of something extra that a man didn’t need – a rib bone. Thus, women are bad, superfluous and made of man-flesh. Of course they need to be controlled, or else they won’t let you fuck them any more – and rape them, and kill them. So, the right repeats “abortion is murder” eight quadrillion times to demonize women and turn us against each other, and it’s worked like a charm.

And if this rape is done by the STATE — then this rape isn’t really rape-rape?????

Seems like the long term goal is to get more women in office in Oklahoma — but first add OK to the list of states to boycott.

[keeping in mind that some women are as misogynistic as men -- if not more so. My state Senate district elected one of the most misogynistic females -- this woman hated other women and felt that welfare to women should be abolished because welfare destroys the family. She also ran for Gov -- and lost.]

This type of law is engineered by the anti-choice movement. Yet “new feminists” treat me like I’m a horrible person because I correctly, factually say that women who are movement anti-choicers cannot be feminists. Anti-choicers make these laws, and yes, I’M THE PROBLEM! ORLY? What anti-pregnancy laws did I make recently?

I am desperately hoping that Sarah Palin will come out in support of this law. Sadly, she’s probably too politically savvy to do so in public. But does it matter? The movement is in favor of banning all abortions, even in cases of rape or incest. So is Palin (only exception is “life of the mother”.). All these state laws are meant to effectively remove all access to abortion, whether by making it impossible to afford one (as BBS said) or by making a woman jump through endless hoops and suffer pain and humiliation (remember my post about the law that forces a woman to get a mental health exam before having an abortion??!!!!) to deter her from deciding whether or not to have a baby.

No one will ever convince me that we should stop talking about reproductive rights for the sake of representation. Fuck that shit! Do people really not have any clue what is happening out there?!

(Stands next to BBS, pounds head against same wall)

I am sorry this canot pass any sort of constitutional muster…even alito and roberts should be appalled by this it is “cruel and unusual punishent against women….

I propose:

Any man who foists himself, his penis, or his mideval morality on a woman in any matter that affects her person, must have a red hot poker shoved up his A$$. He must then have his penis removed while fully cognizant and have a monitor facing him so he can watch the whole procedure with a medical person discribing in minute detail the procedure being undertaken….oh and you can forget the local jackass!

The first in line for this new law is the entire Oklahoma State Legislature….

OK madamab….about your compressed air car manufactured by TA-TA Motors those sexist french!

Now in honor of our Hannah Arnt of song MadamaB a little tune I learned somewhere:

(sung to the tune of “Bring back my Bonnie to me”)

The codfish Lie Dead on the ocean…
The bluefins Lie Dead on the sea…
They all died of oil pollution
caused by the Oil company!

Bring back, bring Back, Bring back the bluefins and cod!
Wait its not our Sea because BP has leased it from God!

OMG Fuzzy! You are on a real tear tonight! LOL

Fess up, what’s your poison? Wine, beer, something stronger?

Check out the air car! BTW for our friend Fuzzy – it’s Tata Motors, and they’re Indian – hence the name. ;-)

madamab its just been a day at work LOL and tomorrow I have my quarterly teeth cleaning at the dentist

that is amazing my new 37 mpg hwy chevy aveo could be obsolete then well I want one if it has that range!

They are pushing this agenda because having children keeps women out of the workforce.

LOL Fuzzy! Well, I feel ya. After two days at jury duty, I feel like hoisting a few myself!

April, I’m sure that’s one reason, but it’s certainly not the only one. Plenty of fundies of all stripes push for State control of women’s bodies, and it’s really just because they hate and want to control women.

I have an Idea that could bring this whole fundamentalist thing to an end if women would just boycott fundamentalist men…thats all fundamentalist men muslim christian jewish…all of them sorry boys no children for you! Your sick contagion must be stopped!

-Consider it Evolution in Action! or Social Darwinism!

I realize we may have to “Liberate” and “Deprogram” some poor misguided women that support these insufferable tools…but sometimes yah gotta break a few eggs….

Fuzzy, I wish we could deprogram them. It’s just so sad that any woman would put up with them. But that’s what the patriarchy does.

Personally we could probably raise a fortune for womens causes if we Pay per Viewed a deprograming os Sarah Palin and Anne Coulter I would pay to see that and maybe Ms Schaffly well the stress of Liberation and deprogramming would probably kill her….

I am sure if these little fundamentalist enabler ladies had met the right gay man they would not have gone down the “wrong path” of mental stagnation…

LOL Fuzzy! That’s what happened to me – I met so many great gay men, there was no chance that I’d ever be anything but a feminist!
:-D

These Oklahoma laws are insane.

The anti-choice strategy of chipping away our reproductive rights at the state level seems to be working. Too often we focus on what is happening in Washington. We all need to be paying more attention to who is getting elected to our state legislatures.

I agree, Beata. Sometimes local races are extremely important.

Wow, this thing is scary! It’s really astounding how far Right our country has gone – since Obama’s election. I don’t watch the MSM – is this getting any coverage in the media at all?

Beata, you are right. There is a movement afoot all over the country to get these “ultrasound” laws passed, mental evaluations, etc. Chip, chip, chip. For all intents and purposes, in great swaths of the country, there is no legal and safe abortion. Note: legal and safe. I’m sure there are some back alley practitioners, and that breaks my heart in a million pieces.

On a lighter note, regarding the Tata car: WANT!

Fuzzy – you get your teeth cleaned quarterly? Me too. It’s the only way I can keep things at bay.

my dentist insists so I do it I also floss daily….LOL
