MW: Rahm Speed

Posted by: chatblu on: September 9, 2010

Mayor Dailey of Chicago has announced that he will not seek re-election. Rahm Emanuel has been known to state that being Mayor of the Windy City is his dream job.  Dare we hope?

Rahm goes way back in Democratic circles.  He was politically active in college, and worked on a number of campaigns thereafter.  He was an advisor to Bill Clinton’s finance committee and managed to push Clinton into raising buckets of cash (about $72 million, which was an unheard of sum in those days) which came in handy during the rough early days of the campaign.  He was rewarded with a senior position in the Clinton White House, and was instrumental in many objectives, including the doomed healthcare initiative.

Rahm left the White House in 1998, and embarked upon a career in banking, despite the fact that his undergraduate degree is in liberal arts and his master’s in communication.  He reportedly amassed a considerable personal fortune during this stint.  Clinton appointed him to the Freddie Mac board of directors in 2000, and he served for only one year.  That time period was marked by a number of scandals ranging from accounting irregularities to campaign contribution snafus.  He resigned in order to run for Congress.

Emanuel won his election in Illinois’ 5th District, following Rod Blagojevich.  He rose rapidly, becoming chair of the Democratic Caucus after the 2006 elections.  Many have stated that he was well on his way to following Nancy Pelosi into the Speaker’s chair.  (He also sat on the Finance Committee, which oversees Freddie Mac.  He was absent from the meetings during which the Freddie fiasco was investigated.  He stated that he did not want any appearance of impropriety.)

While he initially declared that he would support Hillary Clinton, he remained neutral during the primaries.  He declared his support for Obama afterwards, and renewed acquaintences with the Chicago-based staffers.  He was tapped for White House Chief of Staff, and the fun really began.

He earned his nickname of “Rahmbo” well.  He further divided the party by referring to the liberal wing as “f$%^ing retarded”, prompting an awkward apology to the Shriver family and the Special Olympics.  He utilized similar adverbs when discussing the unions.

I cannot blame Emanuel for the President’s policies. (It’s rumored that he pushed internally for more Clinton-esque measures and lost.)  The Chief of Staff is charged with implementing rather than setting policies.  However, the WH slant toward banking and Wall Street may not have begun with Rahm Emanuel, but I somehow doubt that he sat up nights pleading tearfully for the rights of the “little guy”.  There was also a nasty allegation from Jane Hamsher and Grover Norquist (the odd couple, to be sure) that the White House was running interference for Rahm in the Freddie Mac fiasco until the statute of limitations expired.  You may remember the petition they sent forth to AG Eric Holder – here’s en excerpt:

“The New York Times reports that the administration is negotiating to double the commitments to Fannie and Freddie for a total of $800 billion by December 31, in order to avoid the congressional approval that would be needed after that date. But there currently is no Inspector General exercising independent oversight of these entities. Acting Inspector General Ed Kelly was stripped of his authority earlier this year by the Justice Department, relying on a loophole in a bill Mr. Emanuel cosponsored and pushed through Congress shortly before he left for the White House. This effectively ended Mr. Kelly’s investigation into what happened at Fannie and Freddie.”

We’ll never know how much truth was in that.  What we do know is that there need to be some heavy-duty super quick changes at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and replacing Rahm would be an excellent start.  (Actually, many of the WH “not quite ready for prime-time” staffers need to go PDQ.) We need someone who can actually get through a week without alienating yet another part of the Democratic base.  I would personally be thrilled if the COS were not such a corporatist.  It would be even nicer if it were someone with a measure of personal accountability.  We need a doer and an achiever, preferably with a modicum of couth.  We don’t need anyone else who will be so offensive that even more of the f-ing base stays home in November.

Run, Rahm, run.  Oh, and take Gibbs and Axelrod with you.  They’ll be invaluable in setting up your campaign……………………

This is an open thread.

I wonder who will replace him… How about Caroline Kennedy!

LOL!!! Now, there’s a thought.

I don’t want Rahm traveling alone to Chicago and am more than willing to pay for an extra ticket in the name of Barack H. Obama.

All he has to know is that it is another paid vacation and I am sure he will have his bags packed in record time.

Well said, Pat.

@3 – What would really sell Obama is a reserved Presidential seat with his name sewn on the back I would definitely consider that if I were you. Worth every penny! :-)

We are in rare form today, Widdershins! Perhaps the Possum Seal could be resurrected for such an occasion.

@ 1-DYB, Thanks for the laugh!

They are wordsmiths of the first order.

Favorite comment from that piece: If Rev Jones is so hellbent on a book burning why not wait until George Bush’s book is released in November?

Love it!

Is this Hillary coming out against the cat food commission?
“I think that our rising debt levels poses a national security threat . . .
So I don’t think we have a choice. It’s a question of how we decide to deal with this debt and deficit. . . .
And there are a lot of people who know more about what needs to be done and who, frankly, have a responsible view, whose voices are not being heard right now, and I think that is a great disservice to our nation.”
Krugman? Stiglitz? Galbraith?

Could just be.

This says it all:

Daily Presidential Tracking Poll
Thursday, September 09, 2010 The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows that 23% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as president. Forty-seven percent (47%) Strongly Disapprove, giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -24 (see trends).

Actually, ever since Obama emerged on the national political scene, I’ve always thought mayor of Chicago would be his dream job.

Then again, maybe it would be too much work for him. How about if Rahm gets him his old job back as law school lecturer? One course per semester – could he handle that?

Nope Nope Nope….We don’t want Rahm back! Chicago has enough up and coming Democratic Harlots and Political bottom feeders to make Satan blush!

No…..We don’t need him further mucking up what Daley has so far screwed up!

@15: Agreed. I would love to see Rahm out of the WH, but if he runs for Mayor of Chicago, I hope he loses. Poor Chicago has enough problems!

Hey, Red. Good to see you back.

P.S. I never said that he should win.

Me and Pat @ 10 have the same taste in favorite comments….

I was thinking would it be OK to burn the Republican Party Platform on 09/11? Or would that be an abusive use of my 1st ammendment rights?

Was just thinking….

I will be getting a filling replaced during the great book burning so I will not be in any mood for those tools that morning!

Hiya Chat! {{{{Waving}}}} :-)

@18: I know, Chat, but he probably will win. That is the dilemma. I would rather see him leave for some nice job on Wall Street.

Jesse Jackson Jr is also contemplating a run.

@22: Yipes, what a choice!

It’s a dinger.

Man, Chicago has it rough. But, we have Michael Bloomberg as our mayor, so we’ve got nothing to brag about either.

The only thing I like about Bloomberg is the smoking ban he enacted. I choose not to smoke, so I shouldn’t have to inhale that crap every time I want to go have a drink.

(sigh) Maybe the best thing would be Rahm leaves the W.H. to run for Mayor of chi town but loses. He’ll land on his feet. I’ll say thing: Don’t put him on the middle East negotiations. Anyone who sends a dead fish to somebody does not have any tact. If I’d been the recipient of the dead fish I think I’d have had to send it back. Decapitated.

@26: Exactly.

I finally registered to vote today, after a year of being off the rolls due to moving, caring for the dying, death, caring for the pregnant, birth, (yes, I’m a Grandma now of a gorgeous baby girl)…whew!! What finally did it was a tweet which alerted me to the fact that the evil anti-choice Rep. Lynch (no, I will not call him pro-life, or pro-anything except enslavement of women),..anyway, the evil jerk actually has an opponent, and he’s in my district. Of course, I can’t vote in the primary, but just the thought that the demographics of this rather conservative suburb had evolved enough to allow a viable challenger to Lynch was enough to get me to city hall. At least I can vote Green or Rainbow or anything against Lyncy, who, sadly, will probably win the primary, in November. I am hoping the younger generation will by sheer numbers eventually drive this Neanderthal out of Congress.

Well, you can vote, make calls abd ring doorbells.

Saints and Vikes on NBC tonight and Auburn and Miss State on ESPN. :-)

I know! My remote will get a workout.

Chat@32: Oh yeah.

Saw this at uppity’s. How can this man be so delusional? (Tim Kaine) I know he has to put on a good face but…be sure to check out the keychain!

Does football make life worth living or what? ( Rhetorical question! )

Beata@34: It helps.

Wow, Fredster. Looks like the lovely Terry Jones has decided to cancel his book-burning event. He claims that he has accomplished his goal of getting the imam to move the mosque away from Ground Zero. Delusional, much?

The immense danger that this one moron in a tiny church in Florida allegedly posed to our troops, has now also been canceled. Well, except for the fact that they’re in war zones! That danger, sadly, remains.

P.S. You football heads will be happy to know that I have agreed to DVR the opening game of the season for my hubby, who will be at work at that time. I personally would rather watch almost anything else.

@33: That’s really something.
@34: Oh, yeah.
@37: You’re a good woman, MB. You can always watch Auburn play Mississippi State on ESPN.

Here’s what McClatchy has to day re: the Rev:

Jones said on CNN Thursday afternoon that instead of burning copies of the Quran on Saturday, he will fly to New York City to meet with Muslim leaders who had hoped to build a mosque near the site of Ground Zero.

“If they were willing to move that we would consider that a sign from God,” Jones said.

Jones worked out the meeting with the help of Imam Muhammad Musri of Islamic Society of Central Florida, who spoke in Gainesville after Jones.

“I want to thank him and his church for making the decision today and to bring to a peaceful end what would have been a spectacle,” said Musri, who said he will accompany Jones on his trip to New York

Oh, to be a fly on the wall……………………

Yeah, somehow, I don’t think Terry Jones’ goal is to avoid a spectacle.

He is an attention junkie, and now he’s gotten involved in the mosque mishegoss. Somehow I doubt Rauf was just waiting for this moron to weigh in before he could see the error of his ways!

So no Islamic Center in NYC…if they dont agree to moving the center then I can tell you Rev Flat6000yroldEarth.Com will burn the books next week!

Organized Religion at its best is all I can say…

Seems like the only folks who are sensible are the Quakers and Reformed Judaism!

Or Toddlers and Tiaras, perhaps?

@43 – That show creeps me out. Those poor little girls!

Ruh-roh. The rev has figured out that there will be no mosque move. He doesn’t look happy.

Chat@45: the last thing I just read was the that the NYC Imam said “huh?, I don’t think so”.

Looks like I’m going to wear out the clicker going between the two games tonight.

MB: You’re a good wife! :-)

Now the burning is “suspended” rather than cancelled.

Chat@47: Oh Gawd.

Maybe sometimes a hit squad is a good thing!

Wow! This pre-game show in the Quarter has been fantastic!

Okay, I’ve said this time and time again:

New rulz: Singers at national sporting events who sing the S.S.B. must sing it as close to the original melody as possible. This is not the Met. Regional Auditions nor is it Idol or America’s Got Talent!

well The Imams are showing that to them they value their own pride more than their holy book! I think that is fitting These types of religions are more about the the deliverers of the message than the message or the god/dess that sprung it forth. Oh and in the pecking order the followers are lowest on the list!

I am including The Rev Flat6000yroldearth.com to in the above critique!

Fuzzy, I love your website for Terry Jones! LOL!

Yeah, Chat, I told you he was clueless. He really thinks he could convince Rauf to change his mind?

Fredster, I totally agree. Just sing the damn song without all the gospel ornamentation. I love gospel, but it doesn’t belong in our National Anthem.

So, is Brees showing Favre that he should have retired two years ago?

GEAUX SAINTS!

MB: It just so totally pisses me off! Grrrr…Half the damned time their “interpretations” aren’t worth a shit!

I mean, I’ve never heard a rock, soul or gospel version of Oh Canada, God Save the Queen or La Marseillaise. ;-)

MB@54: Aww…I give the old guy points for true grit! LOL, *old* at 41.

Drew’s new nickname is Cool Brees. ;-)

But I bet he won’t be, because his wife is pregnant and supposed to deliver sometime during the season! 8O

Whooo yah…Minn e sota just scored a touchdown but missed the extra point.

Got a long day of services tomorrow, folks. Hope you like my Feminist Friday post. Nighty-Night! (Hee hee, the Saints are ahead!)

They won, but it wasn’t pretty.

Ditto with Auburn.
