MW: The “Outsiders”

Posted by: madamab on: October 29, 2010

Just as Barack Obama famously and successfully campaigned as a “Washington outsider” in 2008, the Tea Party Republicans are doing the same in 2010. In a year when 65% of Americans want to get rid of every incumbent Congresscritter and start over, these insurgents have borrowed Obama’s argument, claiming that being outsiders makes them better able to connect with “us,” the Little People.

Every Tea Party ad I’ve seen hits this point, from the sophisticated:

To the audacious:

To the unintentionally hilarious:

But is this strategy going to be as effective in 2010 as it was in 2008?

In 2008, people wanted to get rid of Bush once and for all, so the Democrats had an open field. Any Democrat who could mount a convincing campaign would have been elected. Given all that, it was amazing that Obama, prior to the unexplained stock market crash in September, had actually achieved a statistical tie with John McCain. Had the Repub base been excited by more than the late addition of Sarah Palin as the Vice Presidential nominee, McCain could very well have beaten Obama, despite spending about $40 million in comparison to Obama’s $800 million and despite being a Republican in an anti-Bush year.

Why did Obama come so close to losing? We all have our theories about this, I’m sure. For me, the Clinton factor looms large, as well as Obama’s repeated insults and unwarranted nastiness towards the traditional Democratic base. But I also think that Obama’s lack of a substantial resume worried quite a few people, and rightly so. In fact, USA Today called it “The big question about Barack Obama” in January of 2007. But even then, Party operatives and a worshipful press managed to turn the potential negatives into positives.

Nicole Schilling, chairman of the Democratic Party in Greene County, Iowa, says Obama’s lack of a long political record will work to his advantage. “Some people are saying he’s young, he needs to wait,” she says. “I think it’s going to work to his advantage here. … He’s kind of a blank slate, and people are projecting what they think onto him.”

It appears that some of the Tea Party candidates (who have also been gaffe-prone and insulting to voters, like Obama) are using this same “blank slate” approach, but even more aggressively than Obama, who famously asked “Why can’t I just eat my waffle?” when a reporter tried to interview him at breakfast, and complained “I’ve already answered like eight questions” at a press conference. Whining and complaining aren’t enough for some Tea Partiers: lawsuits and complete press shutouts are their preferred tactics.

“Angle’s strategy seems to be: Let the [mainstream press] do what it wants — I have Fox, conservative radio, my ads and Karl Rove,” Ralston said, alluding to the former Bush adviser’s independent group, American Crossroads.

Will this approach be as successful for the Tea Party candidates as it was for Obama? According to Larry Sabato of Rasmussen, signs point to “no.” Sabato predicts that O’Donnell, Whitman and Paladino will lose, while Angle is in a very tight race with despised Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid; and in Alaska, Joe Miller may be beaten by the write-in Republican candidate, Lisa Murkowski.

On the other hand, Tea Party candidates who have not shunned the press seem to be in much better straits. For example, “Granite Grizzly” Kelly Ayotte is projected to win the Senate Race in New Hampshire – she has participated in several debates and has been endorsed by many New Hampshire newspapers. But then, Ayotte has government experience, so perhaps she is not as gaffe-prone as her compatriots.

Practically speaking, it seems obvious to me that a candidate with no government experience simply cannot be effective in a high-profile position like a Congressperson or a Governorship (or, of course, the Presidency). If this Obama-based “no experience is good!” cult-of-personality campaign template fails to achieve results for the Tea Party candidates currently using it, I can only hope that it will be abandoned once and for all. We’ve already seen how badly it backfired on the true Obama believers, didn’t we? Maybe it’s just me, but I think “Ready on Day One” would have been much better than “Ready on Day 1000, Or Perhaps Never.” And in 2012, we’ll need Congresscritters and a President who don’t need to learn on the job.

After this election, they’re going to have a lot of work to do.

This is an open thread.

Thoughtful post, Mad. I enjoyed the “tabula rasa” analogies. With any luck whatsoever, this may be a fleeting concept.
I’m off to a cat show – back Sunday pm.

Ahhh, yes, blank slates. My question about Tea Partiers is – how can you project anything on someone like O’Donnell?

Love the Hillary ad. Who’s William DeJean?

There is something rather naive in the suggestion of “blank slates”.

Too many women ended up in divorce court by marrying one of them.

Let’s hope that voters have learned their lesson about “Blank Slate” candidates.

Have fun, chat!

I hadn’t seen the original “I’m You” ad until I did research for the post. I have to say, O’Donnell comes off very strangely – almost like a “special needs” candidate.

I heard at least four different “he’s a Washington insider!!” Ads while watching the Series last night. Good gried, it’s an epidemic!

NOW defends Christine O’Donnell:

http://tinyurl.com/3xpj5zv

Madamab – email me at john@johnwsmart.com please!

question for you.

Will do, John! Been out and about today.

@7 – Good for NOW. That’s the way it’s done!

Terry O’Neill does have her moments.

In that article, Christine O’Donnell says the Dems can’t attack her position so they’re using sexist attacks. No, it’s not that they can’t attack her positions. It’s that they know how badly sexist attacks hurt a woman candidate, as a recent study proved. It is a strategy that has worked before.

Yes, MB @ 9. It’s actually very easy to attack O’Donnell on issues. But they prefer a different method – because it seems to work every time. In her campaign’s statement they mentioned Hillary Clinton and Palin as fellow victims of misogyny. But Palin didn’t have much sympathy for Clinton until after she herself started getting attacked for her make-up and wardrobe, etc.

Islamic militants in Somalia publicly execute two teenage girls for being “spies.”

@ 6 Though, good for NOW, and the rest of us, but I sure do hope that someone pushes this story that has not been told, that Cream City provided research for us on yesterday:

Here ya go: http://www.jsonline.com/news/statepolitics/65989207.html
And to run her out came the claim of a “lesbian affair,” a claim later retracted upon the request for, y’know, evidence.
This is a very good woman, the first ever elected to the second highest office in the state, who worked hard for women in one of the most backward states in the country for women, in politics or otherwise. For that and for backing HRC, the lieutenant governor had to be punished — and punished Chicago-style, with rumors of a “lesbian affair” by a lovely, smart grandmother with a huge following of women here.

Love the Hillary 2012 commercial I am sure she loved it to!

William DeJean is my hero whoever he is…he can obviously afford a spiffy commercial that will piss off the Obamarama folks!

la t da @ 12 gay baiting is so Johns Commission! Of course Obama Loves it when he is doing the baiting!

William DeJean is just a Hillary supporter. I believe he’s a dentist. He feels strongly about Hillary running, though.

As for that sexist/gay baiting story of CC’s, the story she linked didn’t say anything about the allegations that the Lieut. Gov. was a lesbian. Not that I doubt CC’s story in the slightest, but I’d like to have some more details so I could really do some analysis on it.

@16 Yah, I went back are read it more thoroughly too. Surely there is a link somewhere. I surely can see how it could get buried. That is some damaging stuff.

@17 – It is very damaging, and you can see the outlines of the ugliness hiding beneath the blanket of political niceties that the Lieut. Governor was forced to speak. Obviously something very bad went down. I want to know more! Maybe after the election we will get the details.

Speaking of sexism – apparently David Letterman has compared Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the prostitute that was held against her will by Charlie Sheen.

http://tinyurl.com/2dfcl5y

Isn’t he wonderful?! And people wonder why I don’t watch late night TeeVee. Both Letterman and Leno are sexist assh0les IMHO.

There was an amazing piece of snark at FDL today. I know you don’t go there. But the author nailed the “she should apologize to me” comment referring to the Rand paul goon to this trash about Christine. I guess some Republicans rags are blaming the Dems for this. And the Dems are saying Christine made it up for votes. It was some clever shit, and the little sexist came out of the woodworks, not realizing it was snark. Best October “Surprise” ever!

Okay I had this late yesterday. For Halloween, everyone must go get their “vampire name”. See yesterdays thread for some of the names and comments.

http://www.emmadavies.net/vampire/

MB, Chat, la and I all have ours so everyone else needs to get theirs.

Oh! I see Fuzzy got his vamp name:

The Great Archives determine you to have gone by the identity:
Milosh Rowan

Known in some parts of the world as:
Famine of Beijing

The Great Archives Record:
More of a spirit than a Vampire wondering the orient in search of a lost Love…

I am: “Duke of The Ghastly. Known in some parts of the world as: Scourge of The Underworld.”

DYB@23: Oh…you and Armand! ;-)

Perhaps I’m waaay to cynical but when I see destination Chicago I have to wonder about it and especially right before an election.

Fredster your tinfoil hat is working just fine like mine is!

fuzzy@26: I blame Bush for the cynicism. Remember all of those elevated threats, code orange or whatever right before elections when he was in? Sad…really sad.

Code Chartruese! Code Lavendar! Code Fushia! now there are some codes I can get behind!

Redecoration of the blog — new look. So I’ve been away.

I feel like taking my phone off the hook — between telemarketers and political calls.

Someone sent me a link to that assault — sort of like getting the message out to the “little wemmens” —

Now back to reading Sci Fi and mailing my unmarked ballot. My way of voting but NOT voting for any pig of either party.

Fuzzy, you should see my tinfoil chapeau.

About 26 seconds in.

You know….I really like when parents get the kids involved in their activities…NOT

Fredster @ 30 that guy was the funniest thing about the movie! sad he has passed away a victim of the reagan era refusal to deal with the issue of AIDS!

Sorry I have a sore spot for Reagan-Bush era HIV/AIDS policy

I can’t post – help me! – oh for gosh sakes, I’ve been trying to post a comment all day (and of course I’ve forgotten what I wanted to say), and there was no submit or post button. I’ve tried several times – no post, no submit. This time I clicked on the notify re follow-up comments and site updates and clicked on the Blog at WordPress.com and it took me to the wordpress site. When I used the back button, I was returned her, and magically the Post comment button appeared. I know I’m not crazy, I know I’m not crazy……..well perhaps a bit crazy but not about posting comments.

Fredster, I haven’t read any recent comments so will do so now. Just wanted to let you know that my Vampire name is wimpy, and quite frankly the description puts me into a Jane Austen novel as the little girl who was just so good. I wanted to be the Hulk of vampires!

Fuzzy, I didn’t realize that he was gone, although I knew he was ill because he was a very brave person and announced it, in the hopes that something would be done. I checked that movie dbase, and holy hannah, he was far too young.

Fredster, I’m really serious about that vampire name thing. I’ve been thinking – Bloodsucker sounds good, what do you think (much better than Faith Po-something which sounds like a name out of what I imagine is in those insipid teen novels – you know, the Twilight crap).

And now chaplains in the military think DADT is all about them. Boohoohoooo!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101029/ap_on_re_us/us_gays_in_military_chaplains

BTW Fuzzy, I love your bear avatar = I said so in a previous thread but everyone had already moved on – darned Post button – and btw, I don’t have one for this comment either. Is it Me? Did I offend WordPress? Must have because I just did the same thing – clicked on the Blog at WordPress.com, then hit the back button and voila, the Post comment Button magically appeared. It must be me

fuzzy I didn’t know that about “jonny”. He was the high point.

HT, you go to this link and it will generate your vamp name:

http://www.emmadavies.net/vampire/

that is actually me in the celluloid HT so know you will all know me when you see me jetting around on the Draft Hillary 2012 campaign!

DYB@36: That’s a crock of shit. I liked this from the article:

Opponents of the ban argue that military chaplains have a different job than ministering to a parish where everyone shares the same beliefs. They must respect all faiths and counsel all service members, from devout Muslims to atheists.

HT> It’s weird about the “Post” button. I’m not sure what’s up with that. MB might have some ideas when she returns!

DYB, I read the first sentence and couldn’t go any further. Of course they are going to object – they are members of a patriarchial system which has no room for anyone who doesn’t fit their pattern of what should be – never mind the LGBT who are Xians and goddess forbid that those mix with the “pure” heteros. Take that for what it’s worth, because I’m an atheist and a hetero who is sick to death about this whole situation. For the sake of sanity, people are people. I am celibate, my neighbor is not, my other neighbor is gay. We all live on this planet. I just cannot understand why some people feel so threatened by other people.

Fuzzy, are you serious, is there really a draft Hill campaign rather than wishful thinking? Pictures, we will want pictures!

same thing again – no post or submit button – and yes I emptied out my cache etc – CCleaner is a godsend.

Happened again, hit the link to Blog at wordpress.com, then hit the back surfing butting to bring me back here, and voila, the Post Comment button suddenly shows up. As no one else has indicated a problem I can only conclude that there perhaps Mulder wasn’t crazy and Scully should have listened to him more closely.

Oh I gotta gets me back to Loozieana: 8O

Hey Fredster, I hope you get home real soon.
For you

I love me some Ella…what a woman!

But I actually met the ledgendary Pearl Bailey when I was taking the train home for Xmas in Iowa in Chicago at Union Station she was it town for the Original Mayor Daley’s Funeral. The tracks were frozen and we were snowed in until the tracks could be de-iced!

I just mooned over her I am sure she was thinking this future gay white boy is gonna need some help and she gave me a few minutes of her time in the station restaurant. She was a real lady!

I was so taken by her regal presence I forgot to get an autograph!

Fredster does Mr Bingle still make his Black Friday Appearance on the Side of Masion Blanche?

Mine definitely sounds like a drag queen name. I always said I was going to come back as one in my next life.

{{{waves}}} Hi Northwest! Good to see you. Yes, we’ve redecorated a little.

@44 – Ooooh, no you didn’t bust out Ella and Satchmo! I LOVE IT! One of the greatest duos in jazz history!

Actually, HT, you are not the only one. I heard from Back Bay Style that she was having trouble too.

The only thing I can think of, is that maybe you are not signed into WordPress? Or perhaps it’s your browser?

If everyone was having the same problem I’d say it was a blog issue, but since they’re not…

Yes you are surely a child of Artemis/Diana La t da

OMG La T Da is that is the Sanger Theater in NOLA?

Yes, fuzzy, I was “the light of a many night” until some chick waited outside for me one night after I got off work and threw my bra at me after I gave her the wrong phone number the morning before. I kinda calmed down after that one.

@43 – Check it out, HT! You’ll be seeing Fuzzy’s avatar up there shortly, I have no doubt…:-D

http://www.facebook.com/hillaryclinton2012

I am in good company if DYB or any of the other regular posters are having the same problem. I can live with it, not I know how to get around it.

Fredster, my vampire name is Faith Pope (funny because I’m one of those dreaded atheists) I’m known as the Seductress of the Mountain Ash (whatever that means – I’ve never had an urge to have it on with a tree). This is what kills me – A peaceful one, of tormented goodness, who lives in places of the Rowan where stakes are freshly cut.

Now if I put in my birth name I’m known as Antoinette Bourignon, known as the Nuit (night) of the Mountain Ash with the same modifier (the peaceful one yadda). Anyway, it appears that even as a vampire, I’m rather deficient in the threat category.

fuzzy@48: Sadly, Maison Blanche is now the Ritz Carlton in nola. It’s a great hotel! I stayed there one weekend but M.B. is gone. I think Mr. Bingle is still around but alas no shows with him nor is he one the side of the bldg. :-( Progress I guess…

No, M.B., no D.H. Holmes Dept store, nadda, zip. In fact a local group did a vid about it.

While we’re talking about our great black female singers, let’s not forget Sarah Vaughn.

HT@55: Ah, but you would be a sly seductress, luring your victims in! :-)

Fredster @58 – well that’s one way of looking at it, and in the days before I swore celibacy I had no trouble attracting men, but somehow it never worked out – they had to leave or I’d perform nasty rites up to and including murder. Geez, before I met (virtually of course) you and Fuzzy and Gary et al, I thought all men were scum sucking pigs – based on experience of course and with the exclusion of my bro-in-laws and the hubbies of my friends and of course the neighbor’s hubbies however – the last fun episode cost me more than 100K. and trust me, the sex was not worth it. Sly seductress – not any more for sure. Keep em away from me, please. And before anyone thinks that it’s because I’m a overpowering manipulative person, believe me, back in the days I was getting fleeced (by not one but two men) I was a silly pie in the sky optimist who believed that everyone was good and kind. During both relationships, I supported them, and both relationships left me seriously bereft in the bankbook. I’ve learned that I have no taste in men as partners, although strangely, I have great taste in men as friends. Go figure. Gall darned hormones, thank the godess that I don’t have that problem anymore.

@56 lol Please tell me that one of them is you, Fredster. I remember Stein’s.

@59 Oh my, HT. You even made me blush and normally only Invalidresponse could make me do that.

BTW, since we’re all posting videos, how about a little self-promotion! Those with facebook can check out a little teaser for my episode of “Psychic Kids” that premieres this Sunday at 10pm (Eastern time) on A&E.

You can also check out a brief clip from the episode here:

Okay, I posted two links and ended up in moderation! Let me awwwwut!

@61, sorry La didn’t intend to provoke embarassment – guess I got carried away – had two glasses of wine tonight.
If I’ve caused any discomfort to anyone else, please put it down to the wine!

I have had just enough wine tonight that I want to go in moderation. Florida.

@63 Read 64. With you in the wine department. Pinot Noir. I thought typing “Florida” used to get use banned.

La, we’ve been dancing for a long time. I’m a white wine girl. Good night m’dear – take care and hug Penny tight. I’m off to clean out the cat boxes and hug the cats. Oh shit, I’ve turned into the cat lady. Shoot me now!

@66 No doubt to dancing, HT. Yes we have. Will probably turn into cat lady myself one day. Nite-nite. I think everyone else is trapped in moderation land.

Madamab…a play in one act about Brazille Obama and Rove meeting to discuss the sucess of Obama destroying the Democratic Party maybe unvieled on November 3rd after the Tuesday Massacre?

I am just thinking outloud…..

HT I ma know as Milosh Rowan….maybe we are related in the vampire world?

Fuzzy@68: Oh yes! definitely.

La-t-da@60: No, I’m not one of the group. It’s group called Benny Grunch and the Bunch. They do a number of nola-themed songs and vids.

My self-promotional post is still in moderation and is getting lost in the shuffle. It simply means I’m going to have to repost it again tomorrow and the day after. (This is all promoting the premiere of my episode of “Psychic Kids” this coming Halloween Sunday! Booo!)

OMG, DYB. I saw the commercial for it today. I think this morning. 6amish my time. I thought that was the show you were telling us about. I told Penny, “If it is what I am thinking of, I know a guy who worked on that.” !!!!

hope madamab see my crequest @ 68….

@68 – I just haven’t had the snark since I lost my job…but good news on that front has been happening. Fuzzy’s beard was right! :-) Got three interviews next week!

DYB – I will let you out.

@72 We watch reruns of the Sopranos when we get up. So that is the station I saw it on.

Lord, HT – there should be an “o” between the first and last letters of your initials!

Yes, hormones can be treacherous. I kissed a lot of frogs before I met Mr. B!

DYB: What was the number of your post so we can see?

@62, Fredster. I know that shit is real. Thank goodness these teenagers have support.

Apologies that I haven’t been back here today until now — a big, busy day, sending my firstborn off on a big move away. How I will miss him!

Anyway, I’ve only read through about the first dozen posts above and see that more was requested on the sliming of our lieutenant governor to get her out of the running to be the state’s first woman governor. Here you go with another link — for starters; let me know if you want more:

http://wisconsintruthproject.wordpress.com/2009/10/28/lawton-day-two/

My post was over at 62, as la-t-da pointed out.

Yes, the psychic thing is real. They fake nothing in the field when they shoot it. One of the girls in particular (the one in the teaser) is especially intense with her abilities.

Next week’s episode is also mine and the two teenagers help cops on a cold case of a disappeared teen. (Now missing 3 years.) The stuff they picked up about him was really amazing. I will remind ya’ll about it next week!

I had remembered you telling us about that last month or so, DYB. It is great to find out that the people that work on these shows also believe what they are seeing rather than put it out purely for entertainment value. I think the isolation that people feel, especially teens, that have these abilities, is very painful. It is great to find out they are taken seriously. Nite.

la-t-da> Yes, we all take it seriously. We recognize that these are kids who lead hard lives – they are extremely afraid, lonely, and mostly not accepted by their peers. (Frequently not accepted by their families). Some have had religious leaders in their towns declare them Satanists, etc. And it’s quite amazing how transformed they are by the end of the shoot, and when we get follow-ups with them for the end of the episodes. They have formed a community of former participants and stay in touch and support each other. It’s quite amazing.

Thank you, CC! I will be sure to check it out this weekend. I hope the sendoff of your baby went well even though it had to be very difficult. {{{Cream City}}}

DYB – I had no idea it was real. Wow! I will have to watch!

MadamaB, you betcha, as we say in the Midwest — where our lieutenant governor was HRC’s chair, i.e., chair of the campaign for the entire Midwest region. I think our LG made some very prominent speeches for Clinton early on, too — nominating speeches and the like. It was tough for her to do so for HRC, as the governor here — who despises the LG and made her life miserable from the start — was quite the Obot, as were all of the other party leaders . . . all of them being boyzes.

I see in the current political scene one after another of HRC’s major backers being stabbed in the back for it, most recently Meeks in Florida. I well remember how impressive he was in the campaign, sticking with HRC when so many other African American pols were being hounded to get on the Obus.

This payback all is standard Obama/Rahm Emanuel/Chicago politics, of course. It is not enough to defeat an opponent; the opposition must be slimed and ruined and run out of politics to never return — and to serve as an object lesson.

CC – read the link – WOW. Dirty dealings indeed! Makes one wonder how some people can look in the mirror each day without retching.
