NIPF is my new acronym for “Now it’s Pelosi’s Fault”. The Republican Party ran hour upon weary hour of attack commercials replete with the most unflattering pictures of Speaker Pelosi that they could find. Right-wing candidates spent hour upon weary hour haranguing crowds with how they would get rid of Nancy Pelosi when they rode into Washington with their conservative guns ablaze. You see, Now It’s Pelosi’s Fault. Uh-huh, every crappy thing that has befallen the populace in the last few years is all. her. fault. If it weren’t for Nancy Pelosi there would be full employment. If it weren’t for Nancy Pelosi the housing market would be peachy. Probably, if it weren’t for Nancy Pelosi the SF Giants would have never won the World Series. How did she become so unspeakably evil? By doing her job effectively and passing legislastion, of course. The success of Speaker Pelosi led to a Republican reaction similar to this:
Yep, she has definitely become the Frau Blucher of the Republican party and it is worth noting the deafening silence on the part of the Democratic establishment when it comes to defending her.
That said, the Tea Party ladies now appear to be coming into the sights of the Republican establishment. Sarah Palin’s announcement that she may run for president if no one else steps forward appears to have set some teeth on edge. God, what a nightmare that would be for the Republicans – Sarah and the Grizzlies vs. the Establishment candidate. Can you say Sharron Angle? Barack Obama would surely think that he had died and gone to heaven were he given the chance to run against the Mama Grizzly herself. Some grumbling that Sarah “cost them the Senate” has been overheard. I agree that Angle and O’Donnell were a stretch, and that Sarah would do well to spend some time vetting her potential endorsees, but two more victories would not have a Republican Senate made. That would have brought them up to 49, and even if they lured Joe Lieberman to their caucus, Joe Biden would still be the tie-breaker. Should Joe Miller lose, he will lose to an establishment Repub and not affect the balance of power one iota.
Michelle Bachmann is also taking it on the chin. She made it known that she expects a first-class leadership position in the House of Representatives. John Boehner has gone suddenly and completely deaf to her expectations. While I certainly can understand why he feels that way, her antics were absolutely fine and dandy when she was bringing in the bucks (and the votes) for Republican candidates nationwide. Now that they’ve won, the Republicans appear somewhat peevish and ungrateful, don’t you think? Sadly, she has now announced that she will not run, which I assume means that she will get some other very visible position. This should prove to be interesting, at any rate. Can you imagine the fun that left-wing talk radio will have should she win any position of significance?? It’s probably too much to hope for, I fear.
The moral of the story is that somehow, some way, it appears that these women are the root of all political evil. Damn them anyway, they just don’t seem to know their places. While I certainly don’t agree with Palin and Bachmann on much of anything, they did some serious work in promoting the Republican victory, and I must grudgingly count points for their effectiveness. I disagree with Nancy Pelosi on a host of issues and she folded like a lawn chair on some matters dear to my heart. Still and all, her accomplishments during her tenure as Speaker of the House are numerous, and I daresay that history may remember her well. Good for her for refusing to back down. While I’m not too sure that she should stay on as Speaker, I admire her tenacity in declining to be run out of office.
I just hope that women votes take note of the treatment of these ladies, and carry that memory forward into the 2012 cycle.
This is an open thread. Happy Veterans Day to all who have served.
I am glad we have soften our anger at nancy by the bluedogs are barking at her….Her big Mistake was backing Obama I am beginning to think she is comming to terms with that.
I’d give her one term as minority leader “on approval” and if she makes the jump to dump Obama in the next 18 mos then I say all is forgiven. If she can get back the house in 2012 then I say I may be ready to almost forgive 2008.
The fact that she is being attacked by the right wing (vaginally challenged) part of her own party is telling also. The Bluedogs are much more responsible for November 2nd than Nancy, they were the prmary force in watering down legislation. Taking Single payer off the table (or solidly backing obama for doing it) and then fightig the Public Option Sparkle Pony….
The nation gave the Dems the green light to FDR it up and they did not hear the message. They got the message I hope this time if you are just going to be Rethuglican lite (just as Odeios but 1/3 less satifying) then we might as well give them back the rains of power sort of…
The Rethuglicans must under stand by not handing them the Senate they to are “on approval” with the American Public.
If they dont do something the Same voters that ushered them in will show them the door in 2012.
Mr Boner I would not get to comfy in that speakers chair….
I’m going off the reservation here but these women, Bachmann and Palin in particular, are just plain awful. Even the GOP recognizes this and is acting accordingly by pushing them to the side.
Nancy, at least, can be credited with having the political smarts. She has lived and breathed this stuff since she was a child. But she did “cave” to the whims of those who sought to weaken the finished product of that horrible healthcare fiasco with the Stupak Amendment at a time that a voice was needed to push back. Instead she bowed to the Obama machine.
If women cannot depend upon women to stand up to these egregious acts perpetrated by a male coalition then I have no sympathy whatsoever for them. When you continue to play the “big boys” game for political expediency then you have lost me.
They continue to stand by the “patriarchal philosophy” and I could care less if they are trounced. My voice would be much stronger in their defense if for once these women stood by me.
They haven’t. Better to go down fighting than to back off the issues that have a negative effect on women as a whole. Maybe they will come to the realization that when something is worth fighting for they will stand up and be counted.
Until then, I honestly could not care less.
If the country had bought the socialist meme then it would have handed the senate to the dems the fact that it did not should be pause….
Surely someone in the political statistics department noted the left abondoned them in record numbers staying home and voting 3rd party!
Or are they going to ingore or not do good science on this? If they are smart they will! They just cant buy the rethuiglican Meme!
sorry ment to say:
If the country had bought the socialist meme then it would have handed the senat to the Republicans and taken it from the demsthe fact that the country did not should be pause for both sides!
I am deeply disheartened by the news out of DC these past few days. The possible extension of the Afghan pullout by another 3 years. The Catfood Commission recommendations. The pull to the Right for extending the Bush tax exemptions by the WH. I could go on but you get the idea.
The election of Obama brought out those “young voters” who were so enthused by his schtick that they organized and got out in droves in order to make this happen. These young people, primarily well raised and well educated, emerged from the bubble of their own “specialness” and went to work for the “cool guy” while convincing their adoring parents to do the same.
But the key factor was that these young people had never suffered the indignities as yet that life throws our way. They had been “planned for” by upper and middle class parents who made sure that their progress in life was as unhindered as possible by any obstacles and their “specialness” was heralded as the primary concern.
I am betting that few of these “young voters” ever had a paper route or mowed lawns or “made do” during their formative years as their soccer Moms and Little League Dads drove them to and from whatever activity was designed along the way to ensure their well being. The goal was always intended to meet the requirements of those SATS that would ensure the same success their parents enjoyed.
Without having ever to have faced the tragedy of job loss, foreclosure, rising health care costs, and all the other burdens of daily life, they got onboard the Obama train with nothing else in mind than being a part of this “historic journey”. Little consideration was afforded the inexperience of this man who came from nowhere, accomplished little, and promised much.
These are the same “younger voters” who will eventually set the dial for the progress and future of this country and it is more than troubling to witness. At heart, they are focused on the money they will eventually make and how they too can hold on as tightly to it as the generation that preceeded them.
They have yet to know suffering, anxiety, or the inability in knowing which way to turn when things begin to collapse.
An overgeneralization? Perhaps. But these “younger voters” are who pushed Obama over the top and for this we pay the price.
Pat, I agree – one can only shudder about what they will do when the new “celebrity” comes along. Maybe Brad Pitt for president – although Pitt has probably more down in the ditch work experience than Obama.
Have a good Veteran’s Day Fuzzy. Almost time for our Capital dedication, so must run and get my box of tissues ready. Grandpa died at Paschendale, Uncle Gord was in the engine room when a torpedo ripped through in 44, and Uncle Alex was in the South Pacific on an aircraft carrier throughout the second world war. Today is my day for remembering them, and all the other brave men and women who fought and fight to keep us free.
Oh, forgot Aunt Cis she was quality control in the factory that produced the Lancaster bombers, and Mom worked in a factory producing ammunitions. All gone now, sadly.
The thing is I want so much to believe in somebody.
I really like Anthony Weiner, Bernie Sanders, and Al Franken, but I am not hopeful that when “push comes to shove” they won’t collapse when the time comes. We saw this happen during the lead up to the healtcare reform bill and it was demoralizing.
My hope is that this time around they will have seen that their capitulation gets them nowhere and they will emerge with a much strong, and much needed opposition to what is happening to the middle and lower classes by these odious minions who are there only to carry out the policies of their corporate masters.
Our future lies in defending the principles of the Democratic Party but what I am witnessing is a thorough debunking from those who are without principles of any kind, and an electorate who has little sense of history.
It almost feels like pushing a gigantic stone up a mountain with our bare hands.
That is the saddest thing of all – the loss of faith in the government holding the people’s concerns as paramount.
“Why Won’t Nancy Quit?” does have an all-too-familiar ring to it, doesn’t it? Now, when we have heard that before, with another prominent woman politician’s name? Hmmm, could it be . . . 2008?
A good post, Chatblu. And although I have a lot of reservations about D’Allessandro Pelosi’s obeisance to Obama, too, I do not recall just such mutterings about many men in politics.
When will we hear from these same circles, “Why Won’t Obama Quit”? Never.
Fredster – A very happy birthday, and many many more.
Yah Fredster, it’s past time for you to go home. I hope you get your wish Oyster stuffing and all the rest.
Just spent my day driving around the area picking up food to replenish the local Open Pantry and food banks that are running low in my area.
It is personally difficult for me to witness this devastation that some people must endure just to survive. It is unimaginable that in a country this large and this magnificent that we are unable to provide jobs, food, hope, and how we treat those who are not doing well in this economy.
What is wrong with us? How can we sit and listen to those greedy pigs who want to enrich the rich and deny those who are without insurance, jobs, food, and the safety of having a roof over their heads?
It is much too demoralizing to witness this up close and not feel the same pain of those who indeed suffer as a result of rotten policies, greedy opportunists, and those who simply do not give a damn about their fellow man.
Perhaps if they too made themselves available to see this devastation first hand they may have more reason to care. But I feel such a sense of hopelessness after today that it is impossible to put it into words.
Fredster, thanks for linking that Common Dreams article. Happy Birthday!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, FREDSTER
AND MR BEAR, A MOST HAPPY VETERANS DAY
I know, Pat, the people outside of stores begging for money is growing.
I stopped at Circle K yesterday hoping they would have 1/2 & 1/2 so I wouldn’t have to go to the grocery store for one item.
Two people asked for change. I asked if they were hunger or they wanted it for something else. Both were hungry.
I took all my change in my car and had enough to buy them hotdogs and cokes. 2.27 each. It is heartbreaking to think someone doesn’t have 2.27.
I almost felt guilty for just having 5.00 worth of change just laying there in my car.
Penny and I are going to go stock up on Slim Fast. You can get it on sale cheap by the case. It is a good thing to pass out when people are in need. Cheap calories but there are some nutrients in there.
@53 Well, I hate to say it, but I would rather the age old battle of Socialism Vs Capitalism, rather than fighting Corporatist. In some fucked up opposites attract kind off way Socialist and Libertarians have something in common: We both hate corporatism. Both of those schools of thought, took the word Oligarchy and usurpation very seriously in the “line long of abuses” in the Constitution.
I would be thrilled to go back to the Randians vs Marcuse (Marxian) fighting of the 1960′s rather than fighting this corporatist bullshit. This whole thing is just mind boggling that America is doing this to her people. Although I have pretty much known for the last 20 years that this time was coming, it is just so sad to see it here.
Damn, that is a great piece by Freeman at CD. “Shame on you Barrack Obama.”
If they are okay will taking tax payer money to run their “free market” then yes they are corporatist. I haven’t read Rand. I just remember that the protests I did during the bailouts, the most vocal voices were the Hippie Greens and Ron Paul supporters. The Obama folk at that time still thought Obama would “hear them”. Knowing they were idiots for thinking that the Republicans or Democrats would “fix it”, gave us even more to have in common.
Ooops. They are going to be downgraded to the TLC show, “Junkyard Wars”.
