Activist Wednesday: Move It or Lose It! The Left and the Five Stages of Grief

Posted by: madamab on: December 29, 2010

(MB’s Note: Thanks, La-T-Da, for this suggestion!)

It’s not quite New Year’s yet, but may I suggest a resolution for all of us? Despite the recent progressive-sounding advancements made by the lame duck Congress, we all know how bad the next couple of years are going to be. Watching “Burnt Orange” Boehner, “Permasmile” Bachmann and “Snake Lips” McConnell hold forth on the evils of non-white, non-Christian, non-male Murkins is bound to induce nausea in the strongest of constitutions. Can we try to just know that and accept it? Can we try to move through our five stages of grief regarding the suckitude of both Parties, so we can get to Acceptance, and then to action?

I don’t know about you, but I think most people on the Left are still in the phases of Denial, Anger, Bargaining or Depression. They cannot accept that it is the Democratic Party that needs them, not the other way around. They refuse to embrace their power – the power of a huge voting bloc to get what they want out of their “representatives.” (The conservative base, as we saw in 2010, has no such problem.) These lefties have become so addicted to the idea that the Dems are the guys in the white hats and the Repubs are the guys in the black hats, that they can’t see the truth about Obama when it’s not just staring them in the face, it’s flashing like an overdecorated Christmas light extravaganza. Below are some examples of prominent “liberal” pundits who have recently demonstrated one of these four phases, either in writing or on The TeeVee.

Denial: Paul Krugman. Really, Paul, GET A CLUE ALREADY. How many times does Obama have to demonstrate his willingness to destroy the New Deal before you believe it?!

Bob Kuttner must have some source for this story, about Obama planning to propose Social Security cuts in the State of the Union. Let’s hope it’s just a trial balloon.

(facepalm)

I must wonder aloud here – why does Krugman think Obama created his Catfood Commission, then appointed Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson, who then came out with the Chairman’s Report on Deficit Reduction, which recommended – wait for it – Social Security cuts?! Did George W. Bush use mind control to force Obama to make this happen?

For Krugman to be this myopic about Obama, this late in the game, is truly mindboggling. The Denial is strong with this one. As you can see, Denial leaves you stuck on the sidelines, shaking your head like The Krug, muttering “There must be some mistake! This cannot be happening!”, hoping that a clear statement of intent is just a “trial balloon.” It’s not a good place for an activist to be. Deal with it, Mr. Nobel-Prize-Winning-Economist: the era of “fauxpe” is over.

Anger: Keith Obamaman – er, Olbermann. Keith’s furiously magnificent “Special Comment” about Obama’s tax deal gave voice to the anger and disgust we are all feeling. I do think that anger can be a spur to action in some cases, but when we get stuck in this stage, we can be manipulated and drawn in directions we really do not want to go. Case in point: the bizarre embrace of Sarah Palin, the antithesis of Hillary Clinton, by avowed Hillary Clinton supporters.

Bargaining: The New Republic’s William GalstonIn this article, Democratic strategist William Galston writes an entire legislative agenda for Dear Leader; then, he plays TelePrompter for the State of the Union address. Finally, he explains how his guidance would help Obama in the next two years.

This is just one option for the State of the Union address; there are many others. But all the good ones have some things in common: They speak directly to our economic circumstances and to our fears; they are equal in scope and ambition to the magnitude of the challenges we face; and they embed specific policies that make sense in a broader success story—a narrative that points the way to a brighter future. At the beginning of the next Congress, we will find out if Obama is able to seize his historic opportunity.

Galston is so deep into bargaining that he seems to think Obama is sitting there reading his essay, wrinkling his august brow, and deciding which of his admirable suggestion to follow first. This is remarkably similar to the way we will pray to the deity of our choice, hoping against hope that he/she/it will change an unchangeable situation. And, sadly for Galston, the desired outcome – that Obama will take any of his suggestions – is just as impossible. Obama is not a policy wonk or a strategist. He has no interest in a coherent narrative – he never had one in the first place except “I’m Not Bush and I Didn’t Vote for the War.” He’s just going to continue on with Bush’s third term, then fuck off to Davos, or wherever the real decisions are made, and demand his due for finishing the destruction of the American Middle Class.

Which leads us to…Depression.

Ahhhhh, who am I kidding? I’m depressed, you’re depressed, we’re all depressed at one time or another. We’re in a Depression, for heaven’s sake! In fact, the Kubler-Ross model suggests that we move through all of these stages in no particular order, and more than once, as we continue the healing process. I really don’t want to link to the whiners at Daily Kos, so I’ll just move on to the final stage.

Acceptance: Ian Welsh. Here is a guy who has seen a horribly depressing future (one which many of us might not agree is coming, but I think his vision has the ring of truth), and yet, he still suggests actions we can take to deal with it. These are good suggestions regardless of your feelings on the coming Opocalypse.

I have said it before, and I will say it again.  If you can get out, get out.  If you can’t get out, but you have children, get them overseas—send them on exchanges, send them to overseas relatives for a year, send them to a foreign university (they’re better and cheaper).  Get them out, even if you can’t get out.

(snip)

In the meantime, if you have to stay, make sure you’re on good terms with your neighbors, your spouse, your friends and your family.  Figure out how to grow food wherever you are and how to reduce your dependence on anything but people you trust.  (Don’t trust any corporation.)  And, if you can, organize.  Organize locally, organize at the State level, organize nationally.

One thing I know for sure: When it comes to the future, the Left must move it, or lose it.

This is an open thread.

Okay, now I’m Depressed.

Depressed and disillusioned.

I never expected much from Obama once we knew we were “stuck” with him for 4 years but I did sort of, kind of “hoped” to have my doubts erased because after all, aren’t we all Dems here? Boy was I wrong!

This “limp string” has been more than helpful in turning this nation more to the Right and has given the GOP more reason to exult over his win by upholding most of the decisions of Bush and Co since he took the oath.

With a solid majority in the House and an almost certain majority in the Senate with the few Blue Dogs who remain, my guess is that the GOP won’t much care either way who wins in 2012 as they have already “seeded” the legislative body to their own interests.

With President Indifferent at the helm once again, the few real Dems left in congress will be outmaneuvered, outfoxed, and outvoted and this nation will be wholly in the vice of a party who will have ironclad control.

The party of FDR will be nothing more than a footnote in the history books.

Well, I’m waiting for Godot, so I’m experiencing all five stages at the same time – over and over again. It must be an Irish thing.

Back to bed…

Re: the Ian Welsh article

If we want to leave the US, how do we do it and where do we go? In 2008, I considered moving to Ireland, but heh, heh, the situation there isn’t so good anymore. I doubt I could get in anyway. Canada? France? The Netherlands? The UK? I have ancestry in all those places, but I don’t think that will help me. I’m not a nurse or an IT person. I don’t have skills that other countries want. I am not rich – far from it. What to do? ( As Lenin said. )

This nation reached its peak in the mid to late 90s.
The black hats are ruthless and single-minded, while the “white hats” are wimps or worse.

@4: I paraphrased Lenin who actually said “What is to be done?”.

You just got to love those like Tweetie and Joan Walsh who think that Obama will “fight” now that the has these “wins” under his belt. Pardon me for the horse laugh but he has had two years to learn how to put on the gloves and shove the crap dished out by the GOP down their throats and chose not to.

What wins? It was the hated Lieberman who pushed for DADT and it was the caving into the Bush tax cuts that allowed the START treaty to even see the light of day. The pretend “reform” on healthcare is anything but so what are we talking about when we say “fight”? This man has few principles, little passion, and displays an appearance of one who could give a rat’s @ss when it comes to fighting on behalf of anyone else.

It has to be a tough sell for those Obots who are still unwilling to admit that perhaps a gigantic mistake was made in 2008 in choosing this loser to lead rather than sticking with someone who had proven her bona fides throughout the years and knew a “fight” when she saw it.

This idiot has demonstrated time and again that he is willing to roll over and play dead in the face of the opposition who have vowed to crush him. He is no David to their Goliath.

Amen, Pat.

Hello Widdershins! Dropping in for a second…

We need tens of thousands of people on the Capitol steps, demanding jobs. That is step one. These “public servants” feel indebted to the oligarchy/patriarchy, not to us. We need to remind them who’s boss.

That won’t happen until the Left, as a whole, ditches Obama and gives up its addiction to a Democratic Party that calls them “f@cking retards,” then expects their votes anyway. Believe it or not, I have hope (real hope) that 2011 will be the year this happens.

“Talk to” you all soon!

If you’ve been scratching your head wondering where you put those razor blades…

2011: A Brave New Dystopia

“Orwell saw us frightened into submission. Huxley saw us seduced into submission.”

Only a Democrat could have sold us submission with a pretty bow on top.

@7: Pat, they are still waiting for what they believe to be the Real Obama to show up. Mind-boggling.

Really, I am in no mood for blogging. I am going to watch HGTV or home shopping.

I’m going shopping. Can’t take another day of “cabin fever”.

@4 – In the same boat. I’ve looked. My skills aren’t needed.

I’m going to go finish my book, Top Kill: Reflections of the Deepwater Horizon. It is almost complete. I have sorted through almost 250 screenshots of the underwater volcano grieving along the way.

MB, and you are welcome. I suppose however when it comes down to it I do my final stages of grief alone. I suppose art is action though. Actually I know it is.

They fell in love with Obama. That’s why they are in denial and anger. Of course, he just happened to walk through the office while a woman was spritzing perfume. That’s how it got on his shirt. He can’t possibly have betrayed them.

People will go through any emotional gymnastics to avoid admitting we’ve been lied to because believing a lie makes us quiestion our own competence.

Chat, my mother seems to have developed aspiration pneumonia now. She is wheezing a lot. She is not able to get the Z-pak down. I don’t know if it is the right antibiotic anyway. The nurse is going to call the douchebag doctor to see if he will prescribe an antibiotic in a shot form. Do you know how aspiration pneumonia is treated? What antibiotics work for it?

Watching “Burnt Orange” Boehner,

Now….can someone please tell me how this man can possibly claim his name should be pronounced..”BAY-ner when there isn’t an “A” anywhere in his name?

I was taught as a child that if the e followed the o it should take on the sound of the former..ie BONER!!!!!!!!!

Now, that being said…I absolutely “not” looking forward to watching a “Burnt Orange Boner” pontificate and cry on cue!

I’m sorry Madam but I just “had to” go there!!! :-)

Red, good one, and oh so true. Mind you, I’m canadian, so Boehner would always be pronounced Boner. It’s just the way the English language, as odd as it is, was constructed. Kind of light caught is kot, bought is always bot, paedophile is always pedophile – it’s an English language thing.

Whoops, meant “Kind of like” not Kind of light. Time for a nap.

Beata, I wondered about that. Frequently pneumonias do not show up until you rehydrate the patient. How they are treated depends on size and clinical status, as aspiration pneumonias are always right upper lobe.
Also the wheezing may require respiratory treatments. See if she can be transferred to an acute care facility.

@20: Thank you for the very valuable information, Chat. They hadn’t even done an X-ray so I requested one, ASAP. I also told them to change the Zithromax tabs to a liquid she can swallow more easily. Right now, I am playing phone tag with the Dir of Nursing. I left a message with her asking about respiratory treatments and possible transfer. The n.h. still hasn’t heard back from the doctor.

Beata, take care, and insist on proper treatment. Good luck.

Oh Beata! I’m sorry to hear that about your Mom. Chat is of course correct. Get her transferred to a hospital and please keep us posted.

Boner has what Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced Bookay) has.

Christie O’Donnell in trouble with campaign finances?

http://tinyurl.com/odonnell-campaign-spending

I’ve heard it was pronounced “boner” til he went national, then it was “bayner”.

DYB, I loved Hyacinth Bookay (aka Bucket). I’ve never met anyone else on the intertubz who knew exactly who she was. Brilliant. Thanks for the reminder, I’m checking out youtube now for clips.

I loved Keeping up appearances! It caused me to buy a rather expensive set of Royal Dalton China….and then refuse to serve on it because all my visitors are common!

“Hello, BooKay Residence, Lady of the house speaking….”

“Sherman is that you? yes Mummy will see daddy sends you the 400 pounds to go on your poetry walk about in Iceland this summer….”

“What is that Love? you need another four hundred so you special friend Frank and go to?”

“Well I agree Sherman it wot be any fun splashing in the Blue Lake reading Oscar Wilde alone”

“Mummy has everything under control son bye bye I hear daddy!”

Remember when they took the Rolls out for a test drive? I Loved that episode!

On Topic….I think that we will have to suck it up for another 4 years of Obama and then 12 years of a Reaganesque candidate…

Yes I am totally depressed!

fuzzy said: I loved Keeping up appearances! It caused me to buy a rather expensive set of Royal Dalton China….and then refuse to serve on it because all my visitors are common!

Ah…I don’t have that problem. My family china is chinet! ;-)

Fuzzy, you really are a fan – OMG, I recall every single episode and btw, Sherman was a wimp. Thanks for your recollections. It makes my mania for the program makes me feel more comfortable – I’m not a maniac after all.

HT…Good Neighbors, Are you being served, and one with Judy Dench in it cant remember the name and Keeping up appearances were my 2 hours of BBC TV on PBS….Yes I still listen and support Public Broadcasting

See what good programming the BBC produced and it was basically owned by the British Government. Public Broadcasting should be supported by taxes on Television advertising maybe tack on a low $ 2.00 per spot fee to support public television and radio?

We could split it up 70% local 30% national programing for both radio and television…

Is this a good Idea? I know its a tax but not all taxes are bad…

@29: It’s Royal Doulton, Fuzzy dear, not Dalton. Do try to remember that now, won’t you?

Beata: How did things work out with your mom? Did they get the x-ray?

Fredster: They did the x-ray around 9pm this evening. I’m waiting for the results. They also changed her Zithromax from a pill to a liquid ( at my request ), so I’m hoping she will be able to swallow it easier. She has a fever but it’s not too high. I’m cautiously optimistic.

Beata@37: Eh…I had to go through that with the momster a couple of times…they had to get an okay to call for the x-ray, then a company with a portable arrives and shoots the film and then they have to take it off to be read. Drove me nuts.

If the fever is down that sounds like maybe the zithromax is working.

Fingers crossed.

See y’all in a bit. Need to scare up some leftovers.

BBL

I’m blissed out on bowl games here.

GREAT NEWS! The x-ray shows no pneumonia! She has an upper respiratory infection but the zithromax should take care of that. I am so relieved. Thanks, everyone, for your support!

Now I can go collapse…

good to hear;

Beata@42: YAY! Glad to hear that. Sorry I’m late with this but fixing victuals and then watching f.ball.

Beata sorry went to bed early glad your mom is ok and on the mend!

I’m still awake. Start fooling around with my legacy Palm Tungsten, updated the address book and was able to get a new install of an app that was on the desktop and the pda. Had to email the software company so I could get into their site to d/l the apps. One is a password tracker that is handy cuz I change mine all the time. I only had it on the pda and not the desktop since the desktop went floating in Katrina.

Now of course I’m getting sleepy.

“Acceptance: Ian Welsh. Here is a guy who has seen a horribly depressing future…”

And yet, war would be entirely unncessary if even a few more people started clamoring in earnest for more sustainable energy and products. Which is what we’re going to have to do anyway, after this coming great war is over.

hello morons, meet common sense. They act like there is no “next chapter” after they have a war. Yet, everyone will still be needing sustainable goods and services long after they stop fighting for the last drop of oil. Honestly, the doods in charge just want a plausible excuse which legitimizes their desire to murder people.

Nice article, btw, very interesting…

oh! that moron remark was directed at the folks in charge, not anybody here. People here obviously have a brain.
