It’s New Year’s Eve Morning, Widdershins, and I’m most likely sleeping soundly after yesterday’s exhausting drive up the East Coast. Many of us believe that in dreams we take journeys into the depths and heights of our creative unconsciouses, and I assure you this is precisely what I have done. Thanks to this mystical mode of travel, I have channeled ten guaranteed-to-be accurate predictions for this upcoming year of Two Thousand And Eleven. Prepare to be amazed!
Well, that’s it. My crystal ball has gone dark. But what about you? Why don’t you tap into your own creative unconscious, and share your own 2011 predictions with us?
We wish you a very Happy New Year’s Eve! May 2011 bring you health, prosperity and most of all, love.
This is an open thread.
@2: I think most of us here have watched Hillary over the years and are damn well convinced of her toughness. The woman has ovaries of steel!!! If anyone can work with a corrupt, divided, and inept Congress, she can. After all, she had friends on both sides of the aisle as a Senator and impressed everyone there with her intelligence, political savvy, and work ethic. Would she be able to perform miracles if she ever becomes POTUS? Of course not. These are extremely difficult times for our country and I, for one, am not “sure” any politician can save us. But of all the potential candidates out there, I believe she is our greatest hope at this point. Who would you prefer?
Chat, I have another question for you regarding my mother. She is over the stomach virus and is taking liquid zithromax for the u.r. infection. She is drinking some and seems to be hydrated. But for past few days, she has been refusing to eat or take her other meds. Would a temporary feeding tube be a way to get her food and meds until she regains her strength? I don’t feel it would be an end of life decision. She was doing quite well before this virus hit her. She had been eating, taking her meds, and had gained about 10 lbs since the summer.
i’m not in the mood to usher in 2011 defending Hillary or Obama. I want results. They both can help get us out of this war. Who will fight for it the most and use the bully pulpit? Hillary will have nothing to loose since I doubt she enters the political campaign arena again.
I would rather see Diplomacy rebuilt after 8 years of Bush. We will see what the State Departments Budget is compared to what it was after the Cheney Admin slashed it to hell and back. We will see what the Republican Congress proposes: We will see who goes to the hill to fight the perpetual war for perpetual peace war machine.
If she can leave State with a longterm plan to keep the State Budget growing (which it already has since she has been there) and put in appropriations safeguards through legislation (i.e. IWAVA) that are legislated to be funded will after she or a Dem leaves State I will be pleased.
She was not called “divisive” by the Obama camp and Republican alike for nothing. Both camps did a bang up job reframing “experience with the dirty tricks of Republicans” and “calling them out for what they are” with “divisive”. How’s that “post-partisan” working out for us?
Okay, I will offer a couple pieces of “toughness”. (Second to follow) Some of her stuff is not political rhetoric. I personally wanted some of this after 8 years of Bush.
She was well off the campaign trail when saying this. “Divisive” or “direct” or saying “what one really believes”. All in the eye of the beholder:
I have a feeling our toxic meme alert will only grow as we get closer to 2012.
@11: Ed, after all the political betrayal and lies the country has experienced from both parties in the past 3 years, I am amazed that you still remember the minor flap over Hillary’s sniper comment. You are digging pretty deep there. Do you have an opinion about her hair?
Beata, I hope your mom will be okay and get better – a New Year’s wish for you.
Eddie, what Pat said – Widdershins support her and it’s not a new thing for us. She wuz robbed, and as a result, the country nay the world was robbed. Perfect, no – but honestly, the best most caring, most supportive politician I’ve ever seen besides my country’s own PET, and in 61 years, I’ve seen a lot of politicians.
Madamab, loved your predictions – Miss Cleo could not have done better!
I gave up predictions years ago – funny that because both my mom and grandmum were gifted. I didn’t inherit their talent, although I’ve had my brushes with precognition. I suspect I shut it off because it was frightening, as did my sisters, but strangely, we all call one another when we get a feeling – just to check up you understand. Anyway, just because I won’t be awake at midnight, I will post here what I already posted at Uppity’s – the Scottish Parliament and Auld Lang Syne. Imagine, politicians holding hands and singing. And yes that is Sean Connery (the only James Bond) and the Queen.
A Dem ushering in the beginning of privatization of social security will indeed be a historic moment. “We don’t want to be looking backwards and just go back to the New Deal….”
Eddie, he was not a black man per se – he was half white, he was raised by his well to do white grandparents. He has never experienced the life of an average black person – ever. I recall one night many years ago when my best buddy told me what it was like being raised in a white centric society. She was a stellar example of what being a woman meant – her skin colour was not a consideration. Her mother was another stellar example of womanhood – raising a passel of kids alone while working full time, balancing work, success and child raising. Obama has done none of that. He is a fraud – a half white fraud. And quite frankly, my buddy thinks he’s milquetoast. The convention was rigged because the powers that be knew they could never control Hillary. They knew Obama was a bought and paid for commodity. Nothing more, nothing less. Please, Eddie, don’t bring those talking points here – it’s a rehash of all the discussions we Widdershins have had over the past three years.
Beata, honey, are you angry? Sweetie, don’t be angry. It just really does not reflect your intelligence. /s
Happy New Year’s Eve, Widdershins! Am traveling home (slowly). Can’t wait to catch up with all the great commentary and posts.
@25 – how true that is. Unfortunately, Hillary’s historicness somehow seemed to escape the accepted narrative at the time.
I can oinly echo my fellow commenters re: Hillary. Remember that she had a plan to bail out homeowners (a well-thought-out one) called HOME, based on FDR’s HOLC. She opposed the TARP. She said she would raise taxes back to Clintonian levels. And, she said Social Security benefits did not need to be cut, the program is not in crisis and that Obama was using right-wing talking points when he said otherwise. This is all not mentioning her long decades of fighting for women’s reproductive rights. For one example, as a NY Senator she was instrumental in getting the morning-after pill approved to be sold over the counter for women 18 and over. She got that done during the Bush Administration.
Did you notice that she is the most respected woman in the world for the 9th year running? And she did it without a fake Peace Prize or a bought-off media, too!
But you’re right, that sniper fire comment sure was important. She must not be “tough” or something. And her butt totally looks fat in that pantsuit. :roll;
This is a Hillary-supporting forum despite our leftiness. We made up our minds long ago. Please do keep that in mind.
One more thing – the wingnuts are not the majority of Americans. Glenn Beck got 87000 people on his march; Stewart and Colbert got 250,000. And, the Repubs don’t have a mandate. Even they admit as much. 2 years of their stupidity and religious zealotry will not go over well.
Talk about hair! We had a fun party last night. We watched this:
@31 Never heard of it before, but will look it up. My favorite – Lady Chablis.
From @26. “We don’t want to be looking backwards and just go back to the New Deal….” That quote was from Obama during the healthcare “debate”. Thought I should give credit where credit is do. Thanks for playing, Eddie, and have a great party tonight, and you really are a good writer and story teller.
@25: Eddie, Eddie,
I am obviously PMSing. I tend to get angry, overreact, and take offense easily at “that time of the month”. Don’t worry. It is temporary, unlike the condescending attitudes of some men.
Happy New Year to you, too.
@36 Of course you’re welcome in the conversation, eddie. Have we not given you a warm welcome this last week? Just getting to know each other better. Like I said in the video @19. That’s all.
Eddie, could you please explain your statement @25: “That’s what got us in trouble with Obama!” What got us in trouble?
Also could you please answer my question @5? Who do you prefer to Hillary? Who is more qualified? Who has the necessary “toughness”? Make your opinions clear. My small brain is trying to understand them.
@37 Yup, wrote about it here. I remember it like it was yesterday.
http://wiredleft.wordpress.com/2010/02/04/the-party-of-common-ground/
@41, Beata, your small brain? Now that is a hoot. Anyone who has had interaction with you in the past few years knows that you definitely do not have a small brain, nor do you have an uninformed brain. I don’t think Eddie realized what his words would convey. Typical male, speak first and defend later. However, he seems to have potential and a genuine desire to learn – he just can’t shed his dismissive attitudes when it comes to a losing interaction with those he suspects are female. Of course, he doesn’t really know, but he assumes and we all know what that makes.
@35 – we have given you AMPLE and NUMEROUS explanations for our reactions to your remarks. Read them please.
Or perhaps you are not interested in anyone’s opinion other than your own?
You may not realize this, but you haven’t offered any real criticism of Hillary. By real, I mean “policy-based.” Should you do so, you might find that many of us here would agree with you.
Glenn Beck – that was a response to an earlier comment about how Fox News would make Boehner popular. Nagahapin.
Finally, your remark to Beata was sexist. A woman can be intelligent and angry at the same time. This is a feminist blog and sexism has no place here. Again, please remember that.
@44, Bravo and a hip hip hooray!
@46 That was the final blow for me, bluelyon. The nail in the coffin of the Democratic Party. The man could not have spelled it out more clearly.
Eddie, let’s just be clear when we all “continue this tomorrow” that no one called you “a sexist”. Schooled in “sexist comments” that are subtle, perhaps people not even realizing they are sexist comments, yes, we are learned in that.
@49 – Uppity, it’s about time I returned the favor!
@50 – Exactly! Eddie, one sexist comment does not a sexist make. Sometimes things don’t always come out the way we mean them to. Have a happy New Year’s Eve!
Whew. Made it home unscathed by the partiers in Times Square. Time to lie down for a little while. Later, all.
I’m lying back watching the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen after driving the gruesome male to his friend’s place. He’s set for the night and fortunately I know all his friends, so he’s safe. He says he’ll be home tonight, however I know better. In the interim, I’ve had dinner, the cats and dog are well fed, and I’ve got Sean Connery on the DVD. 5 hours to the New Year, and I hope it’s a better year for us all – you too Eddie.
Oh, btw Eddie if you think it’s bad here, do not visit Uppity’s place.
Goodness, and Fuzzy, DYB and Fredster haven’t even shown up yet. Uppity, you are priceless as usual.
OMG. We just had to go to the shed and pull out every string of lights we have to put all over the yard. It is going to be 17 to 24 here tonight. Unbelievable. We did some sheets last night but it wasn’t enough. Our leaves on our citrus are turning a little crispy. We lost a couple of succulents. We gathered up the cactus specimens we could that are in pots and moved them under the porch. Oh our beautiful yard.
Wishing all here health, love, and inner peace in the New Year. A special thanks to MadamaB for the inspiration, MB, Chat and BlueLyon for your time, energy, and wisdom, and thanks to all the frequent commenters who make this a place not only for information but a real emotional home.
With love and thanks,
BBS
I’m in AZ at 2000 feet. It has stopped raining so now I think it is even worse. It is like Chat sat yesterday. The rain can be a protector. We had to go get all the lettuce out of the garden. We took the spots out of my workshop, Fredster. We look like a freaking used car lot.
Welcome home, MB. Did you have a good vaca?
Wow. It AZ for the blizzard for 5000 feet and above. Insane. Guess there will be snow on the mountains when we get up.

Eddie: As for history being made by electing an African American (in part), that is ignoring history being made by a descendant of Native Americans (in part) — according to genealogists who have researched HRC’s mother’s French Canadian foremothers.
But you didn’t hear about that. Or, of course, about how historic it would be to elect a woman (entirely). . . .
@74 What. Before and after of our yard? Or snow on the mountains in the desert?
I’ll give a pic a try.
Fare thee well, 2010. Happy 2011 to everyone!
Happy New Year Beata! We just lit all our candles and opened up a Pinot Noir from Germany for me and a Mascot from Italy for Pen! We don’t go out anymore for NYEve. Too many drunks.
Sorry meant Muscat.
Happy New Year, Fredster! I want you to know that I think you are very special – and not in a Church Lady way.
Happy New Year, La, Penny, HT, Chat, and MB! Also DYB, wherever you are! And all Widdershins!
Does tomorrow surprise involve chocolate and party hats?
And where is Fuzzy! Happy NY wherever you are, you big redheaded bear, you!
@88: Well, then I will just have to stay up and wait, huh?
Happy New Year to Fuzzy and Pat!
We are having a weird New Year’s Eve thunderstorm. Next it will probably be another earthquake. My kitten is going bonkers.
2 more hours until I can say Happy New Year, Fredster!
Just woke up – Happy new year to all, with the exception of La who has qanother two hours to go. BTW La, I live north of the 49th, as you know a few thousand miles north of you – the weather today 50 degrees. It’s bleeping odd.
Fredster, do not blame me for your proflicate spending on a TV. I don’t have cable or satellite. My only TV is 22 years old, and it’s utilized for watching movies. Much as I love you, your expenditure is not my fault.

My predictions: (such as they are)
1. The nation will sit up and take notice once this new congress begins gutting and proposing “tax cuts” that will effect their very way of life. Good bye Tea Party, hello commonsense!
2. Michele Bachmann will be more visible because she does make good copy. Insanity disguised as politics has given us Jesse Helms and Jim Traficante to name a few just like her.
3. Obama will hang on simply because the alternative that will be offered up by the opposition is even worse.
4. Palin will run. Because it is no skin off her nose either way. A loss will just increase her revenues (which is her primary function) and she will always be available to “whine in” on any topic as she has done in the past two years. It costs her nothing.
5. Obama will capitulate on most everything that will effect the elderly and middle class. It’s his way of governing. He just doesn’t give a damn.
6. Lindsay Lohan will escape rehab and within weeks resume her downward slide.
7. Hillary will more than likely continue for the next 12 months at least as SoS. She is no quitter.
8. The Obots will maintain that the rest of us are out of step with Obama’s genius but will be banging their heads against the wall trying to shake out another contortion as to why.
9. Property taxes will rise due to the shortfall of federal monies and the tax breaks enacted on behalf of the uber rich. Many homeowners are going to see their inability to maintain their ownership as a result.
10. Unemployment will show only a slight downtick and a sense of desperation will begin to take hold as most of us are awakening to the fact that there are few in DC actually looking out for us.
Not sure if these “predictions” are anything new but my guess is that they will carry over to 2011 with little “hope or change” in sight.
